Former Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has delivered another brutally honest admission about his time at the club.

Sacked

Amorim’s tenure at United will go down in infamy as one of the worst spells any manager has endured in the dugout.

He arrived at the club towards the end of 2024, to much fanfare and expectation after the dismissal of Erik ten Hag. The hope was that Amorim could replicate the incredible success he enjoyed at Sporting CP, but the opposite was largely the case.

He was sacked in January this year after an extremely turbulent 14 months, during which he led United to an embarrassing 15th-placed finish in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.

A further flashpoint occurred when the Portuguese coach fell out with Jason Wilcox, the club’s director of football, after the 41-year-old reacted furiously to comments about his tactics and formation in a 1-1 draw with Wolves.

Amorim’s last game in charge of United was the 1-1 draw with Leeds, in which he publicly lashed out at the hierarchy and heavily hinted at cracks in his relationship with them. He has since taken over at AC Milan and, after a difficult start, appears to be finding his feet.

He previously admitted that he made mistakes at United and is consequently learning from them.

Now, he has reiterated this stance, as he sought to summarise that the pressure and scrutiny at Old Trafford were simply unbearable.

Amorim’s remarks

He said [as quoted by MilanNews], “The experience we’ve gained at other clubs helps us in every challenge, or new challenge. Here, it’s more like Portugal.”

“It’s a different kind of pressure, because people outside the club experience the team with such passion. This is similar to Portugal, and I’m used to living like that.”

Amorim added about United, “In England, it’s a little different, obviously. Manchester United is a global club just like Milan, so every single thing you do matters, and that’s helped me try to perform at my best here with Milan.”

“In my mind, everything I’ve experienced in my career has served to reach this point, at this very special club, to be ready to help it.”

“I know that all the experience I’ve gained in the past will help me in both the good and the bad times with this team.”

Legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has shared a touching wish regarding Old Trafford.

Sir Alex’s wish

Sir Alex Ferguson confronts mortality without flinching in his newly released book, Games of My Life, reflecting on his life, legacy, and physical fragility.

He conceded that he has thought about death, though he hopes to at least still be here when Manchester United break ground on a new Old Trafford.

The Scot said, “I’m not one to dwell on what my Maker has in store for me, nor am I afraid of dying.”

“Mortality is always with us, even at the most unexpected of times. I’m much more interested in squeezing the most out of life. There’s much I want to do and a lot of people with whom I want to spend time.”

“Yet, every now and again, death crosses my mind. When United announced their plans for a fabulous new stadium to replace Old Trafford, I found myself wondering whether I would be around to celebrate its opening.”

“I hope they get to break ground quickly, because if it takes five years to complete, I’ll be pushing ninety. However, I know I’ll be at the ceremony one way or another – in person or in spirit.”

Battling

Sir Alex’s no-nonsense touchline demeanour became the hallmark of his Manchester United reign, a defining trait that cemented his legacy as football’s greatest-ever manager. It is a trait he has continued to exhibit since stepping away from football, particularly during his health battles.

He, of course, endured the tragic loss of his dear wife, Lady Cathy, and then underwent emergency surgery in 2018 after suffering a brain haemorrhage.

Finally allowed back to Old Trafford at 84, he disclosed that he had visited the ground a week early to rehearse the walk from the directors’ lounge to his seat, preparing himself for the occasion.

He said of the heroic reception he received from supporters, “I felt like I was being greeted as if I had returned from the dead, which, in a way, was true because so many of the stories that were printed had read like premature obituaries.”

He added in tribute about his wife, “I might have managed Manchester United, but Cathy was the one who managed Ferguson United. Cathy was not just the manager, but also the CEO, assistant manager, team doctor, kit woman and club ambassador.”

Omari Hutchinson has revealed that he and Ruben Amorim enjoyed a chuckle together over the damage he did to Manchester United while both were plying their trade in England.

Setback

The incident took place in November 2024, during Amorim’s first game in charge of United against Ipswich Town.

Marcus Rashford, who started up front, gave United the lead inside 81 seconds with an easy tap-in. United failed to take advantage of their lead and allowed Ipswich to gradually grow into the game.

The Tractor Boys restored parity when Hutchinson curled a stunning effort into the top left corner after taking a deflection off Noussair Mazraoui’s head shortly before the break.

Amorim was sacked by United at the start of the year following an extremely turbulent 14-month spell, in which United finished 15th and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.

In addition to poor performances and results, Amorim also fell out with the hierarchy, and particularly director of football Jason Wilcox.

He was named AC Milan boss in the summer after Massimiliano Allegri was dismissed. Meanwhile, Forson was sold to the Serie A side by Forest and is still looking to make his mark at the San Siro.

Hutchinson has previously indicated that he impressed Amorim at Old Trafford, potentially influencing the Portuguese coach’s decision to recruit him for Milan.

Speaking to SportMediaset, Hutchinson revealed that he and Amorim have joked about the goal he scored for Ipswich against the Red Devils.

Hutchinson’s revelation

Hutchinson said [as quoted by MilanNews], “I scored my first goal for Ipswich against him, and it was a great feeling. We joked about it before I came here.”

On the difference between the Premier League and Italian football, the 22-year-old remarked, “It’s been fantastic from the start. I’m enjoying myself here. I’m working really hard.”

“Compared to the Premier League, it’s still early to judge, but everything here is very tactical.”

United are next in action on Saturday when they host Tottenham Hotspur.

Fulham boss Alvaro Arbeloa’s comments following the 1-1 draw against Manchester United have landed him in hot water. The Red Devils travelled to Craven Cottage on the final weekend before the international break to face the Cottagers in the Premier League.

Michael Carrick’s side arrived at the game on the back of consecutive defeats against Manchester City in the league and Brighton & Hove Albion in the EFL Cup. United were looking to avoid a third defeat in as many games, but fell behind to a Lisandro Martinez own goal in the 63rd minute.

The equaliser eluded the visitors for long periods, before Matheus Cunha scored in the 89th minute to secure a point for his team. Despite that result, United remain 12th in the Premier League table, with questions already being asked of Carrick’s suitability to lead the team.

Meanwhile, Arbeloa was furious at dropping points at home and pointed fingers at the match officials after the game.

What did Arbeloa say?

Speaking after the game, the Spanish manager alleged refereeing bias, stating: “You can see before they scored, the foul against [Harry] Maguire, he’s a guy who is 100 kilos. Every decision was for them.”

“And I knew. I knew after the game against Man City [which United lost after a controversial goal] that they [would not] let Manchester United lose here. We deserved a little bit more.”

He appeared to make a reference to the VAR controversy from the previous weekend, in United’s 1-0 defeat to City. The Citizens won the game via a questionable Erling Haaland winner, which was initially flagged offside by the match officials, before VAR intervened to overrule that decision.

Replays later suggested that the goal should never have stood, prompting the refereeing body to issue United an apology and take action against VAR official Matthew Donohue.

Arbeloa, of course, appeared to suggest that the match officials had tried to undo their error at Craven Cottage, and his comments have not been taken lightly by the FA.

FA have sanctioned Arbeloa for United comments

In an official statement released on Wednesday, the FA revealed that Arbeloa had been charged with misconduct. The statement read: “Alvaro Arbeloa has been charged with misconduct for comments made after the Premier League fixture between Fulham and Manchester United on Sunday 20 September.”

“It is alleged that the Fulham manager acted in an improper manner by making comments in a post-match interview that imply bias and/or question the integrity of a match official. Alvaro Arbeloa has until Thursday 1 October to provide a response.”

Final Thoughts

Arbeloa’s sanction will be of little consolation for United fans, who will be far from impressed by the team’s display in that 1-1 draw. The Red Devils next face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, 10 October, and anything other than a win will further pile the pressure on Carrick.

Former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira has revealed that he was presented with an opportunity to join Manchester United during the peak of his rivalry with legendary captain Roy Keane.

Like Keane at Manchester United, Vieira is considered one of the greatest players to have played for Arsenal. During the 1990s and early 2000s, the pair came to exemplify the fierce rivalry between the two clubs as they competed intensely for English honours.

The pair faced each other on 20 occasions, resulting in seven victories apiece and six draws.

On occasion, their confrontations became ugly, particularly in February 2005, when Keane confronted Vieira in the Highbury Tunnel for trying to intimidate Gary Neville.

However, according to the Frenchman, there was a possibility they could have shared a dressing room. Speaking to Sky Sports, Vieira revealed that he held meetings with Sir Alex Ferguson about potentially completing a controversial switch to Old Trafford. He eventually declined.

Stunning admission

“I had the opportunity to move to Real Madrid a couple of times and I even had an opportunity to move to Manchester United.”

“I had a meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson. Full respect, I couldn’t say no to meeting him because he was an important figure in the Premier League.”

He continued, “We met and we talked and he explained to me his vision that he had for Manchester United and the team that he wanted to build. He wanted to play me with Roy Keane, (Ryan) Giggs on the left-hand side, David Beckham on the right-hand side and (Paul) Scholes to play behind (Ruud) Van Nistelrooy, so it wasn’t a bad team.”

Inside the club, the suggestion is that the 45-year-old will manage to salvage the situation and turn things around. However, that has not stopped the whispers over who might replace him if he does not.

Man United job could tempt ambitious coaches

Several top tacticians would relish the chance to take charge at Old Trafford. Hull City boss Sergej Jakirović, for one, put himself forward as a better option a few weeks ago, in comments relayed by The Peoples Person.

Those remarks may well have caused some discomfort among Hull and their fans.

As the MKM faithful wondered where his allegiance lay, the outspoken Premier League manager has had to clarify the issue.

“I’d rather not talk about that right now. Not from my current position, where I have a club and am happy with the work we’re doing together,” he said when asked about his desire to coach Manchester United, as per Teleskop via Sport Witness.

“When the time comes for the next step, we’ll discuss it. You know my path; I’ve never set grandiose goals but instead developed gradually as a coach.

“That remains the plan. When the time comes for something better, we’ll sit down and talk. Until then, we move forward with God’s help, giving our absolute best in every training session and match.”

Jakirović is an exciting coach whom Ineos should definitely consider if it does not work out with Michael Carrick.

He took Hull from the brink of relegation from the Championship to a fairytale promotion back to the Premier League. Now he has the Tigers going toe to toe with established top-flight sides, collecting two wins, two draws and a loss so far.

That record must have many wondering how much better he would be at a top side with unlimited resources.

For now, we may have to wait and see how Carrick fares after the break; if he turns things around, all well and good. If he does not, we will find out whether the 20-time English champions are willing to gamble on Jakirović, a man with big ambitions in English football.

The stance of Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has emerged after he was used as part of a controversial political promotional video.

Controversy after controversy

Ratcliffe has seldom been far from controversy since assuming operational control of Manchester United in February 2024.

In February, he found himself in hot water after claiming that the UK was being “colonised by immigrants.” Then-Prime Minister Keir Starmer sharply criticised Ratcliffe, who was subsequently forced to issue a public apology.

United and Michael Carrick also distanced themselves from his remarks, stressing that they were proud of the club’s diversity and inclusivity.

Ratcliffe was at the centre of another storm earlier this month, claiming the UK was in decline and taking a fresh swipe at immigrants. He lashed out at the public’s poor attitude towards wealthy individuals like himself, blaming it for driving them to more favourable tax regimes overseas.

In response to those comments, the Manchester United Muslim Supporters Club issued a vote of no confidence in the INEOS chairman, declaring that it was time for him to go.

Fresh controversy

On Saturday, controversial politician and leader of Reform UK, Nigel Farage, posted a promotional video that was headlined by Ratcliffe’s “colonised by immigrants” statement.

Farage, a long-term ally of President Donald Trump, has made immigration a cornerstone of his movement. Manchester United fans have not held back in expressing their displeasure at Ratcliffe’s presence in the video, and The Athletic has now disclosed what the British businessman really thinks about the backlash.

According to the newspaper, “INEOS, the petrochemical firm which Ratcliffe controls, confirmed to The Athletic that the British billionaire, 73, had no knowledge of the video and did not give permission for his words to be used in it.”

“The company did not confirm whether they had asked Reform to take down the video.”

“When contacted by The Athletic, Reform said that, as the clip in question was taken from an interview Ratcliffe did with Sky News, which was publicly broadcast, they did not need permission from INEOS to use the footage.”

“The party also said that as far as they are aware, neither INEOS nor Ratcliffe has complained, and it has no plans to remove or alter the video.”

Another football personality who features in the video is former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp.

While Ratcliffe insists that he did not grant permission for his inclusion in the video, it cannot be overlooked that no efforts have been made to have him removed from it.

A Manchester United fan group has called on Manchester City to be punished severely after they were found guilty of more than a hundred offences related to Premier League financial breaches.

Guilty!

On Friday, David Ornstein of The Athletic broke the bombshell news that City have been found guilty on almost all of the charges relating to breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations.

City were first charged with wrongdoing in February 2023 and have consistently maintained their innocence.

However, they have now been found guilty on a significant number of charges—114 out of 115, to be precise. Sanctions against United’s cross-town rivals have yet to be decided, but all possibilities remain on the table.

Some suggestions that have been mooted include heavy points deductions, a transfer ban, and stripping of titles during the alleged period. Several Premier League clubs, including United, are contemplating collective legal action against City to seek compensation, potentially in the form of lost titles and prize money, in light of the perception that City benefited from their breaches.

Now, the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust has called for the strictest sanctions on City to deter any errant owners who damage the heritage and community value of English clubs.

Statement

MUST has released a statement which reads, “In recent days, MUST has been asked by a number of media organisations and others to set out our view following reports that Manchester City have been found guilty of the overwhelming majority – reportedly 114 out of 115 – of the Premier League charges brought against them.”

“Manchester City continue to deny wrongdoing and are expected to appeal. They are entitled to do so. But if these findings are upheld, this cannot be dismissed as an accounting error or an accidental breach of complex rules. It would amount to industrialised cheating on an unprecedented scale.”

“For years MUST has argued that ownership matters in football. At Manchester United we have seen one form of bad ownership: the Glazers loading the club with enormous debt while extracting hundreds of millions of pounds through dividends, interest and associated costs.”

“At the other extreme are owners who use enormous external wealth to financially dope their clubs and cheat rules designed to protect fair competition. Neither represents proper stewardship of institutions which belong at the heart of their communities.”

“If the findings against Manchester City are upheld, the punishment must fit the crime and act as a genuine deterrent to any owner considering the same route. Stripping titles or other retrospective sanctions may form part of that, but the more important question is what happens next.”

“Manchester City has been transformed during this period into one of the most powerful clubs in world football. If industrial-scale cheating helped create that advantage, one season outside the Premier League would plainly leave much of that benefit intact.”

“The punishment therefore has to remove the advantage gained, not simply impose a temporary inconvenience. There is also a fundamental question of ownership and trust.”

“Manchester City’s owners continue to insist the club has done nothing wrong despite the findings reportedly reached by an independent commission and the compelling documentary evidence which has been in the public domain for years. If those findings survive appeal, football must ask whether the same ownership which presided over industrialised cheating can still be regarded as fit to own and control a football club.”

“If trust cannot be restored while that ownership remains in place, expulsion from the football pyramid unless and until there is a change of ownership should be among the sanctions considered. Football clubs are not ordinary businesses. They are cultural institutions and community assets. Owners who exploit them and extract their wealth are not appropriate custodians. Nor are owners who financially dope them and cheat the rules.”

“Football should tolerate neither. This should be a reset moment to review the ownership of our clubs and the first step is to start to restore trust.”

United are next in action on 10 October when they host Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.

The stance of Manchester United chief executive Omar Berrada on Manchester City’s guilty verdict has emerged.

On Friday, David Ornstein of The Athletic broke the news that Manchester City have been found guilty of breaking the Premier League’s financial rules over a nine-year period between 2009 and 2018.

The landmark ruling concludes one of the most significant and high-profile legal cases in the history of football, let alone English sport.

In February 2023, United’s cross-town rivals were charged with over 115 alleged financial breaches. City have consistently denied any wrongdoing, and an appeal against the verdict is anticipated. No sanctions have been decided upon as yet, although a broad spectrum of penalties could be available, encompassing fines and/or points deductions and even expulsion from the top flight.

A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United have internally assessed the economic losses the club has incurred that could be attributed to City’s breaches.

It is understood that Premier League teams are evaluating their legal positions in relation to any eventual sanctions imposed on City, as they seek to determine what they may individually be entitled to.

Now, The Sun’s Samuel Luckhurst has revealed what Berrada thinks about the situation, considering his past affiliation with City.

Berrada’s stance

The United chief joined City in 2011 in the role of director of partnership sales. He served in this position before he was made the club’s chief operating officer.

It was from City that United acquired the services of Berrada.

Luckhurst writes, “Manchester United chief executive Omar Berrada is confident he will not be affected by the outcome of Manchester City’s Premier League charges.”

“Berrada is privately insistent that he is not implicated in any alleged wrongdoing.”

“The 48-year-old was involved in delicate dealings during his time at the Etihad.”

United’s director of football Jason Wilcox also previously served at City before leaving for Southampton and eventually moving to Old Trafford.

Manchester United’s poor start to the new season has raised questions about Michael Carrick’s future. The Englishman initially arrived at Old Trafford in January as caretaker manager following the dismissal of former head coach Ruben Amorim.

Carrick had an instant impact, securing four wins in his first four games, and went on to register 12 wins in his 17 games in charge last season. That earned him the full-time job at the Theatre of Dreams and raised expectations among fans.

INEOS invested over £150 million in midfield over the summer, but the Red Devils have struggled to replicate last season’s form so far. United have managed just one win in five games in the Premier League and currently sit twelfth in the league table.

The situation has added to speculation regarding Carrick’s future. One candidate who could tempt United is Brighton & Hove Albion manager Fabian Hurzeler.

Hurzeler’s managerial career

Hurzeler started his managerial career as the player-head coach of German club FC Pipinsried in 2016, before leaving in 2020 to move to FC St. Pauli as assistant to Timo Schultz. After Schultz was dismissed in December 2022, Hurzeler was initially appointed as interim manager before securing the full-time job two weeks later.

He eventually helped the Hamburg club to earn promotion to the Bundesliga at the end of the 2023/24 campaign. The German manager was subsequently picked up by the Seagulls that summer, becoming the youngest manager in Premier League history.

Hurzeler has gone from strength to strength since then, and masterminded Brighton’s 3-2 win over United in the EFL Cup third round earlier this month. The Seagulls also defeated reigning champions Arsenal 3-0 last weekend, further adding to the German’s already rising stock.

Fabian Hurzeler: Managerial Career Stats

Hurzeler’s consistent performances in charge at the Amex have already earned him admirers across the league. If United are considering him as an option, however, it appears that prising him away will not be a walk in the park.

Brighton have already made Hurzeler decision

According to Football Insider, Brighton have no desire to allow Hurzeler to leave any time soon. The report states: “Brighton have no intention of allowing Fabian Hurzeler to leave in the near future, sources have told Football Insider.”

The report insists that while the Seagulls tied the German manager down to a new deal until 2029 in May this year, it has done little to deter his suitors. It adds: “Agreeing a new contract for the boss was designed by Brighton to deter any of his potential suitors, but that has not stopped the likes of Man United and Tottenham from looking.”

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, journalist Pete O’Rourke added: “It would take a lot for them to let him go any time soon, because Brighton do not want to lose Fabian Hurzeler. He’s done a great job down on the south coast, he’s really made big strides at Brighton and helped the club make some real progress.”

“Hurzeler is attracting a lot of attention because of what he’s done at Brighton with his aggressive style of football and an attacking style as well, so no surprise that maybe other clubs are looking at him. But Brighton are quite relaxed on this one and he was rewarded for his progress with the new contract in May to keep him at the club until 2029.”

Final Thoughts

United fans can have a sense of déjà vu following the club’s recent struggles this season, especially given how Erik ten Hag and Amorim’s reigns ended. However, perhaps it is time to be patient with Carrick instead and offer him the resources to get the Red Devils back to the top.
