Manchester United are hoping to secure a significant windfall from any potential sale of former forward Mason Greenwood this summer. The Englishman was destined for greatness at Old Trafford before his career was derailed by off-field issues.

Greenwood initially joined Getafe on loan in the summer of 2023 in a bid to piece his career back together, before joining Marseille permanently a year later. The 24 year old has gone from strength to strength at the Stade Orange Velodrome, forcing suitors across the continent to take note.

Last season, the Englishman scored 26 goals and registered 11 assists in 45 games across all competitions, all but three of which were from the start.

United are keeping a close watch on their former academy graduate’s situation, as they have a significant sell-on clause in his contract. The Red Devils are preparing to further invest in the squad this summer and would welcome funds generated from Greenwood’s possible sale.

A previous report relayed by The Peoples Person stated that AS Roma have stepped up their pursuit of the player, who is ready to join the Serie A giants. An update on his future has now emerged.

Roma eager to wrap up deal this month

According to Corriere dello Sport, Roma are preparing to submit their opening offer for Greenwood soon and plan to wrap up the deal before the end of the month. The report states: “The English talent continues to attract huge international interest, which is why Trigoria want to act decisively in the coming days.”

“The plan is ready and involves presenting the first serious bid to Marseille as early as next week. The objective is clear: to try to finalise the deal by the end of the month, capitalising on the French club’s financial needs.”

While the developments would appear to be optimistic for United, there is a twist to the saga.

Roma proposing loan deal for Greenwood

The report goes on to state that Marseille want €55 million for their prized asset, but Roma are proposing a loan deal with an obligation to buy. It adds: “An offer of €40 million, including bonuses, will be put on the table, accompanied by a significant percentage of the player’s future resale value, even exceeding 10%.”

“And that’s not all. The deal would involve a substantial loan fee of (at least) €5 million, coupled with an obligation to buy for €25 million upon his first appearance, plus a further €10 million in guaranteed bonuses.”

The report suggests that the proposal is aimed at minimising the financial impact of the deal, concluding: “A solution designed to minimise the financial impact of the deal; a complex structure, yet one crafted to meet the needs of both clubs, including Marseille, who will have to pay Manchester United 40% of any future transfer fee for the player.”

United would have hoped to raise a significant amount from Greenwood’s potential sale this summer, but the latest developments could put a dent in their plans.

Final Thoughts

Greenwood’s future will matter little to United fans other than how much the club earns from the sell-on clause. While the Red Devils are in the market for attacking reinforcements, they have already moved on from the Englishman.
