Manchester United defeated Atlético Madrid 2-1 in a friendly victory on Saturday to lift the Snapdragon Cup.
JJ Gabriel debut
One of the biggest headlines of the day, though, was the introduction of Manchester United’s 15-year-old starlet JJ Gabriel.
The youngster played the final 10 minutes of the match and brought the fans in Stockholm to their feet with a couple of exciting plays.
Gabriel tore apart his opposition last season in the under-18s and under-21s and looks destined to make his senior debut this season.
The youngster has the possibility of becoming the club’s youngest ever debutant if he makes his senior debut officially before mid-October, which would break David Gaskell’s 1956 record when he made his first appearance aged 16 years and nine days.
This opportunity could be presented in Manchester United’s first League Cup tie in the third round in mid-September, when Gabriel will still be 15.
Dressing room issue
Interestingly, despite the excitement of such a young player looking ready for first-team involvement, there are some practical issues raised.
The Sun highlight that, “Manchester United starlet JJ Gabriel will be blocked from getting dressed in the first-team changing room this season.”
The report continues to explain that, “the 15-year-old prodigy was forced to get dressed alone and away from Michael Carrick’s squad before stepping out for his senior debut against Atlético Madrid.”
Safeguarding rules put in place by the club and the Premier League mean that he will need to get dressed in a different changing room, further down the hall at Old Trafford, for matches.
Premier League rules state that any player under 18 must dress in a different changing room to adult players.
Gabriel would be allowed back into the main dressing room to listen to Michael Carrick’s team talk once all the players are dressed and ready to play.
