It has been well documented that Manchester United would ideally like three new midfield signings this summer.
Head coach Michael Carrick is keen to revamp his engine room following Casemiro’s departure, and so far, the club have signed Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.
The Brazilian has impressed in pre-season so far, while the Belgian has only recently rejoined training following his World Cup exertions.
It has been widely reported that the Red Devils would love a physical presence at the base of the midfield, with Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga, and Carlos Baleba among the top targets.

However, funds are tight in the absence of major player sales, and one player is slowly changing INEOS’ minds about that elusive third midfield signing.

Mason Mount has been sensational as the deep-lying playmaker alongside Santos, and Carrick is delighted with the United No.7’s impact.
The Athletic‘s Laurie Whitwell has claimed that the England international’s form could force United to prioritise left-back instead of midfield this summer.
Speaking on the Talk of the Devils podcast, Whitwell explained, “I’ve been kind of asking questions around this, the more it’s come to the fore that they’re still debating what the next target will be in terms of position and there’s NO GUARANTEE that there will be a 3rd midfielder perhaps with a view on how Mason Mount has been doing in pre-season.

“That is sort of you know I think part of the conversation at the moment where do United want to put their resources and you know LB, I think is still an area of prominence in that regard.”
This could indicate that the 20-time English league champions will utilise all their resources to try and land Lewis Hall this summer, despite Newcastle’s current stance.
While that would be a welcome move, United must be wary of the poor injury record of Mason Mount. It would be a major gamble to trust the former Chelsea ace to stay fit during a season in which United will compete on four fronts.
Everything points towards a low-cost signing in the dying embers of the summer window, a move that might not please the fanbase, who have been dying to see the club sign a marquee name ahead of the new campaign.
