Signing a left-back is firmly at the top of the agenda at Old Trafford next year.
Age is beginning to catch up with Luke Shaw, 31, who no longer possesses the athleticism that once defined his marauding runs down Manchester United’s left flank. It is high time the Red Devils identified a long-term solution in that position.
With INEOS planning a defensive overhaul next year, they are expected to move decisively for a top left-back talent.
Ideally, Lewis Hall would have been the dream acquisition. He was among INEOS’s leading targets for the summer of 2026, yet a deal could not be struck after the club prioritised its midfield rebuild.
Hall has since committed his future to Newcastle United, making a switch next year highly improbable.
United must therefore look elsewhere.
Joaquín Seys transfer opportunity
Intriguingly, another left-back transfer option, Joaquín Seys, could become available next year.
TEAMtalk report:
“[Man United] Interest has not faded with the window. Scouts were said to have been present again in late September, and recruitment staff are understood to rate him highly as a future option.
“[Club Brugge] are understood to want around €35million (£30m) if they were to consider a sale, a fee they previously did not need because they preferred to keep him.”
The suggestion that Seys might now be attainable, and at a defined price, should set alarm bells ringing at Old Trafford, particularly given Brugge’s insistence last summer that he was untouchable.
Still not a straightforward deal
Even so, United must remain vigilant and ready to act swiftly, with Arsenal and Aston Villa also said to be interested.
An athletic, technically versatile full-back, Seys blends high-speed progressive ball-carrying and overlapping runs with sharp defensive positioning and tactical intelligence, so it is easy to see why signing him would be such a coup.
At 21, he could prove a brilliant addition to United’s squad and a real long-term solution to their left-back headache.
