Michael Carrick’s Manchester United dropped two more points to a side in the relegation zone.

United played out a dire 1-1 draw against Fulham before the international break. The Red Devils were expected to take more initiative after a three-week-long break when Tottenham Hotspur travelled to Old Trafford.

However, they delivered an even more frustrating performance, conceding a stoppage-time equaliser against 10-man Spurs.

Manchester United linked with Eddie Howe

With six points from six games, Manchester United have made their worst start to a league season in 40 years, and Michael Carrick can no longer avoid question marks over his suitability as the club’s head coach.

It is not helped by the fact that two experienced managers, Eddie Howe and Antonio Conte, are without a club.

Reports in Italy have claimed Conte would be the club’s preferred choice to replace Carrick should they make a change.

Meanwhile, in England, it has been suggested that the former Newcastle United boss is “quickly emerging as a genuine option” at Old Trafford.

Eddie Howe open to Manchester United challenge

According to Football Insider, Howe would be “interested” in the prospect of being United manager.

The 48-year-old, who secured Champions League football twice at Newcastle, is thought to be on the radar of the United hierarchy.

It is believed INEOS have no immediate plans to pull the trigger on Carrick, but are “weighing up possible contingency plans if results continue to be an issue.”

Howe is admired behind the scenes at Old Trafford, and “the prospect of moving to take charge of the club is understood to appeal to him.”

The former Bournemouth manager is known for his high-intensity approach, something United have lacked under Carrick at the start of the season.
