Manchester United Women secured a vital three points against Liverpool on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Devils came out 1-0 winners at home, with Julia Zigiotti scoring an early goal to settle the match.

Team is growing

Speaking to the BBC after the match, Zigiotti was complimentary of their new Spanish head coach, Eva Olid.

The Swede explained, “we wanted to start the game quick and hope they were not prepared, so we’re very happy about that. I think we’ve just grown confidence in how we play.”

She also complimented the impact the former Heart of Midlothian manager has had, claiming, “it was new when Eva came but I think we’ve grown a lot in training, in the games and we had two cup games where a lot of the players could play so we just keep going.”

Ella Toone

Ella Toone was also asked to give her thoughts on the huge match by the BBC.

The England international was also keen to point out the improvement in the team since the start of the season.

She added, “it’s a project. I think we’re getting better and better each week. It’s really nice now to go into the international break on the back of a win. Tough game, but I think we had energy today. I don’t think in the first half they could deal with the intensity of how we started the game.”

Toone was also complimentary of Julia Zigiotti for scoring and Phallon Tullis-Joyce for making some impressive stops.

The midfielder admitted that the start of the season was not what anybody at the club wants, but has praised her side’s reaction to it. She explained, “but we know it’s a project, we know we’ve got to work hard and we know we’ve got to keep pushing every game. This league’s really difficult and anyone can beat anyone.”

Toone was also positive about her team’s ability to start the match quickly, and it was designed to combat Liverpool’s press.

Her own role

The 27-year-old also opened up on her own role in the team. She added, “I think under Marc [Skinner] I had a lot of freedom. Same with Eva [Olid], she wants to play really attacking football. It suits me. I like to run in behind a lot, but she wants me in the pockets. She knows that I can get on the ball in the pockets.”

She continued, “if we can find the players in the spaces, that’s where she wants me to be. But for me, I’ll always give 100 per cent for the team. I’ll always work hard and that’s the main thing. Then when I have the ball, I need to play with that freedom. I need to be creative and just enjoy my football.”

Manchester United Women took on rivals Liverpool at the Progress with Unity Stadium.

First half

The Red Devils started quickly and Ella Toone’s effort from close range was deflected over the bar after Elisabeth Terland’s knockdown.

United took the lead in the sixth minute when Khiara Keating passed the ball carelessly out and Julia Zigiotti took her time and delightfully lobbed the ball into the empty net after six minutes. The Red Devils dominated possession, but it was Liverpool who almost responded when Grace Fisk’s header was saved by Phallon Tullis-Joyce.

The away side were coming to life and Tullis-Joyce once again proved why she is one of the best in the business. Cornelia Kapocs’ effort was well stopped by the American and she was up quickly to save the rebound in a stunning double save.

After 32 minutes, United felt that they had earned a penalty, but the referee judged that the ball had not hit Kapocs’ arm. United almost doubled their lead when Jess Park drove forward and crashed a left-footed shot against the crossbar.

On 40 minutes, Beata Olsson’s effort was once again stopped by United’s in-form keeper. Andrea Medina scored her first goal for United last season and was inches away from her second, but Keating was well out to smother the ball.

Second half

United started quickly again and Hinata Miyazawa broke well in transition, but her ball was just behind Ella Toone.

Medina was once again fantastic, but she had to come off after 52 minutes for Mared Griffiths after she had picked up a knock in the first half. Meanwhile, Ella Toone almost got the home side’s second, but her shot dropped wide of the post.

Hanna Lundkvist has covered well for the injured Jayde Riviere and she did well at the back post to clear an Alice Bergstrom cross. Maya Le Tissier then slid a beautiful ball into Park, who almost got in behind the Liverpool defence, but Jenna Clark produced a stunning last-ditch tackle.

Le Tissier almost grabbed United’s second, but her glanced header was excellently cleared off the line by Clark.

United had a slice of luck in the 69th minute when Clark was left all alone in the box, but she somehow managed to head the ball across goal instead of at it and the ball was cleared.

After 80 minutes, Keating did well to push away Terland’s drive.

As the 90th minute ticked by, Dominique Janssen made a timely intervention to stop Beata Olsson entering the box.

United saw out the three minutes of added time and Eva Olid’s side won their fourth on the bounce to rise up the table.

Eva Olid has spoken to the media ahead of Manchester United Women’s match with Liverpool Women this afternoon.

The Red Devils have won three on the bounce, including a 5-1 away win at Durham in the Players’ Cup on Wednesday.

No new injuries

Commenting in the press conference, Olid stated that her side had no new injury concerns ahead of the big game versus Liverpool.

Olid said, “everyone is okay, fortunately, apart from the players who have longer-term injuries. The rest are the same. This week has been quite busy. We played on Wednesday and then have another game on Saturday, so we haven’t had much time to prepare. As a manager, I prefer having longer weeks, of course.”

Commenting on the tighter schedule of matches now in the WSL, she explained, “as managers, we want to prepare well, give information to the players and prepare for different scenarios, but sometimes we don’t have enough time to do that. We just need to adapt. If you play on Sunday, that extra day helps a lot. When you play on Saturday, the preparation is a little tighter, but we have to adapt.”

Young players

United’s youngsters stole the show on Wednesday night and the club finished the game with six academy players on the pitch.

Speaking on this, Olid stated, “it was very positive. We finished the match with six young players, and they played really well. But it’s not just about playing those minutes. It’s about continuing to work together, following individual plans and having individual sessions so they can keep improving.”

Ella Toone’s England snub

It was announced earlier in the week that Ella Toone would not be a part of England’s squad for the upcoming internationals.

Olid explained, “you can imagine how all the players who normally are in the squad and then aren’t selected might be feeling. We had an honest conversation. As a manager, the first thing is always to make sure the players feel that you’re there for them and that you support them. We also need to listen. We’re going to keep working together so she can become the best version of herself as a player. That’s the same with everyone.”

The Spanish coach said she was happy with the progress her team have made in recent weeks, but a clear objective is that they want to keep their first clean sheet of the season.

Olid’s attention was then moved to her opponents Liverpool, and she praised the club’s decision to show loyalty with their manager even after struggling last season.

When asked to pick out what the opposition could do to hurt United, she explained, “they have a lot of mobility. They don’t have a fixed attacking shape. Different players can play and move into different areas of the pitch. That’s never easy to defend against. We know they have that mobility, so we have to be ready and prepare for it.”

Manchester United Women have begun to turn their season around after a poor start.

Season to date

Two losses against London City Lionesses and Chelsea had fans concerned, but they have turned a corner of late.

This turnaround started with an impressive 1-1 draw away to Arsenal, before they thrashed Sheffield United 10-1 in the Players’ Cup.

They built on this by securing a much-needed 2-1 victory over West Ham United in the league.

Tonight, they will face Durham in their second match of the Players’ Cup before a mouth-watering match-up against rivals Liverpool on Saturday afternoon.

International call ups

After the match at the weekend, the international break will once again be upon us, and United have had two players called up for international duty.

The club’s official website reports, “Manchester United Women duo Maya Le Tissier and Jess Park have been included in Sarina Wiegman’s latest England squad.”

The English face a two-legged playoff versus Greece for a place in the next round of the 2027 World Cup playoffs.

“England start with a trip to the Pankritio Stadium in Crete for the first leg on 9 October, before the reverse fixture back at the King Power Stadium in Leicester on 13 October.”

Le Tissier has 14 caps for England and was part of the squad that won Euro 2025.

Park has 26 appearances for the national side and has scored five goals.

Ella Toone omission

In spite of a good start to the season, including a goal versus Sheffield United, Ella Toone has not been called up.

The Guardian report that, “Ella Toone and Chloe Kelly have been dropped from England’s squad because of their performance levels by Sarina Wiegman.”

Manchester United Women crushed Sheffield United Women 10-1 in their first match of the Players’ Cup.

First Half

Ella Toone had the first opportunity, but her left-footed shot drifted just wide.

The Red Devils did not have to wait long, as they were awarded a penalty in the 14th minute after a handball. Captain Maya Le Tissier stepped up and placed the ball into the back of the net to calm nerves around the Progress with Unity Stadium.

United soon doubled their lead when youngster Jess Simpson crossed the ball into the box and new signing Rebeca Bernal headed in her first goal for the club. Eva Olid has promised more game time for youngsters, and Mared Griffiths also took her chance when she fired the ball into the back of the net with a left-footed effort.

After 35 minutes, it was four when German striker Lea Schuller rifled the ball into the roof of the net from the centre of the box. United saved probably their best goal for last in the half, when a rapid, flowing counter-attack was finished off expertly by Ella Toone for a much-needed goal.

Second half

The home side started in a hurry and had their sixth goal after 53 minutes. Simpson played a sumptuous ball in behind, and Schuller only had to place the ball past the keeper to extend the Red Devils’ lead.

Seconds later, United had their seventh when Bernal headed in Toone’s wonderful cross. On 58 minutes, Jess Simpson’s wonderful performance got what it deserved when she scored directly from a corner kick.

The hour mark saw the ninth goal for a rampant United when Schuller’s shot broke to Griffiths and she found the top of the goal.

Substitute Ellen Wangerheim really should have scored the tenth, but she headed over Monica Jusu Bah’s inch-perfect cross.

The visitors tightened up considerably and held United at bay before scoring a consolation through a well-worked goal by Amy Andrews.

Griffiths was phenomenal all evening and grabbed her hat-trick after a swift counter with a left-footed shot into the top of the goal.

Jusu Bah almost got her first goal for the club, but her effort was well stopped by the keeper.

Wangerheim missed another incredible chance when she headed a rebound over from point-blank range.

Schuller almost sealed her own hat-trick, but her effort was well blocked at the last second by the Blades’ defence.

The full-time whistle blew, and United will next be in action on Sunday afternoon versus West Ham United in the league.

Skinner leaves

On Monday morning, United released a statement confirming Skinner’s shock exit after five years in his role as boss of the women’s team.

He arrived in 2021 as a replacement for Casey Stoney. United said that it was a mutual agreement for Skinner to vacate his position.

While at the helm, Skinner oversaw both United’s Champions League debut and a first major trophy triumph, the 2024 FA Cup victory. However, United finished fourth last season and consequently missed out on Champions League qualification for a second consecutive year.

Skinner’s departure has given rise to extensive discourse regarding the women’s team’s place within Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS’ overarching project. A prevalent view holds that the manager was insufficiently supported during his tenure at Leigh Sports Village, notwithstanding the team’s periodic lack of consistency.
The recent sale of Melvine Malard to Chelsea is a good example of this. The understanding is that United are placing greater emphasis on bringing through young talent, rather than competing with their rivals in the transfer market’s big-money arms race.

This was reiterated by Le Tissier and Toone as they reacted to Skinner’s exit.

Le Tissier and Toone react

Toone said, “As players, it’s about what we do on the pitch. We don’t focus on the external noise of what’s happening at the club.”

“We’re focussing on ourselves and whatever decisions happen higher up, then that’s on them and we’ve got to remain focussed and ready for the start of the season.”

Asked whether they’ve been given assurances that the hierarchy remains committed amidst suggestions of neglecting the women’s team, Le Tissier answered, “I think the club have been pretty clear with what they’ve said, bringing through the youth. They’ve always done that historically. They’ve been pretty clear with that.”

“When we speak to the new manager, the ambitions will be clear.”

The United skipper continued, “Me and Tooney are at Man United because we want to win and we’ll be doing everything we can to make that happen.”

Toone described the type of manager she wants to see succeed Skinner.

“The club’s ambition now is to bring through the youth, so you need someone who’s going to get the best out of those players, but also look after the older ones in the group.”

“No matter who comes in, we want someone who’s just going to give 100 per cent, improve us as players and as a team and get us playing that attacking football that United wants us to play.”

Toone added about Skinner, “He’s done a lot for both of us as players. No matter who manages at this club, when you don’t get good results or whatever, you come under pressure. That’s because you’re at a big club like Manchester United, we want to win.”

“He was under a lot of scrutiny. But he kept going, he turned up every day. He brought energy. We can’t thank him enough for everything he’s done.”

Le Tissier remarked, “It was obviously not something that you wanted to hear, a manager committing to this club for five years, putting everything in every single day to this club, and now they’re leaving. There’s been a lot of challenges, but also a lot of really nice moments that we’ve had with him as well. It was said but now we move on now onto a new manager.”

United are said to be closing in on the appointment of Eva Olid as their new head coach.

Manchester United Women have experienced a summer of change so far this transfer window.

Changes

Marc Skinner’s side have brought in Spanish player Andrea Medina and German goalkeeper Janina Leitzig.

They have also promoted Layla Drury, Jessica Anderson, and Scarlett Hill to the first team.

There have also been significant departures, as Melvine Malard has moved to Chelsea.

Veteran experience, such as Lisa Naalsund, Millie Turner, Hannah Blundell, and Leah Galton, has also been lost.

Pre-season plans

There is still a lot of time left in the window, but United will need to make some more signings to get their squad ready for the upcoming season.

The opening weekend of the Women’s Super League season is scheduled to start on the weekend of 4th-6th September.

The Red Devils will discover when and where they will take on their opponents this Thursday, when the fixtures are released.

The club’s official site has reported that, “Manchester United Women have returned to Carrington to begin pre-season training, as we build up to the beginning of the 2026/27 campaign.”

The article continues, “Fully revitalised, the squad reported back at our training base on Sunday 26 July, to commence testing and to begin building sharpness with the new season not far away.”

United Women already have their first pre-season fixture announced, as they will travel to the small coastal town of La Manga in Murcia to take on Newcastle United.

The club released videos and images of United stars arriving back at training, such as captain Maya Le Tissier and Ella Toone.

New signing Andrea Medina was also welcomed by the club’s official photographers to her first training session with her new club.

Toone assumes new role

In a groundbreaking move, United announced on Wednesday that Toone has come to the aid of fourth-tier Chorley Women, forming a unique partnership that is believed to be the first of its kind.

Chorley’s previous committee was due to step down in May, meaning the club was on the brink of folding in the absence of a new leadership team

However, with the assistance of Toone, Chorley now has a structure in place, which has received the green light from the Football Association and Women’s Super League.

Toone will partner with Chorley, her ET7 Academy and her creative agency Amicizia Studios. She will serve as creative and strategic advisor, with funding driven through commercial opportunities.

Chorley are viewed as one of the founding clubs in English women’s football, having been established in 1982.

United note that Toone’s Amicizia Studios will produce Chorley’s social-first content, documentaries, digital series and commercial storytelling designed to enhance the side’s profile and boost revenue streams.

The  ET7 Academy will support Chorley’s wider community strategy by creating more opportunities for girls through football, education and mentorship programmes.

Statement

Toone said in a statement, “This isn’t about making headlines.”

“It’s about creating opportunities, building something a little different and helping grow the women’s game in communities that deserve investment and belief.”

“Football has given me everything, and I want to help create more opportunities for young girls to dream bigger.”

“Chorley has an incredible football heritage and a real sense of community.”

“I’m excited to play a part in helping build something that people across the town can be proud of for years to come.”

The post Ella Toone shows her true colours with classy gesture to save historic club appeared first on Man United News And Transfer News | The Peoples Person.

Manchester United Women have made remarkable progress over recent years. The club only started in 2018 and has risen from the second division to become one of the most consistent teams in the country.

Highlights included winning the club’s first trophy in 2024, when they vanquished Tottenham Hotspur Women 4-0 to win the FA Cup final at Wembley. Last season also saw a first-ever League Cup final and an exciting run to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Nonetheless, Marc Skinner’s side also fell away badly at the end of the season, and the fourth-placed finish saw them miss out on Europe. Sadly, the team faces two huge threats to cracking the top of the women’s game at home or on the continent.

Neglectful owners

Ineos have never really seemed to fully understand the women’s team or what it means to the fans.

There have been early dramas, like turfing the team out of their normal training rooms for the men’s team when Carrington was being redone. There were also Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s careless, tone-deaf comments on the women’s team when he asserted that the men’s team was very much the priority back in 2024.

It isn’t fair to say United haven’t signed players, and they have brought in some good additions. Jess Park, Julia Zigiotti and Fridolina Rolfo were all strong signings last summer but, crucially, Rolfo was a free transfer and Park was involved in a swap deal with Grace Clinton.

United also signed players in the winter, with Ellen Wangerheim, Hanna Lundkvist and Lea Schuller, but again, not a huge amount of financial commitment was needed.

Issues left unresolved

The owners have been quite efficient at dealing with the men’s team, but in comparison, issues have been left to hang and fester for the women.

Skinner is clearly on thin ice and not particularly popular with the fanbase, but the club seem loath to do anything about it.

In addition, star players like Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland and Melvine Malard have been linked with moves away, but there has been no public attempt to quash these rumours, leaving fans to sweat ahead of the new campaign.

Lack of signings and rivals strengthening

United’s biggest problem, though, is the ambition of their rivals in the transfer market in comparison to them.

Chelsea are already on a different level of spending and brought in highly rated Japanese international Manaka Matsukubo last week. Arsenal, who also finished ahead of United, have raided Bayern Munich for Georgia Stanway and former Red Devil Ona Batlle from FC Barcelona.

Champions Manchester City have also been busy, bringing in England internationals Beth Mead and Niamh Charles. They also managed to keep hold of their goalscoring juggernaut, Khadija (Bunny) Shaw.

So not only have the three teams ahead of United strengthened, but the teams below United have also taken huge steps forward. London City Lionesses finished two places and 13 points behind the Red Devils last season, but they have very much closed the gap, at least off the pitch.

They have shown massive ambition to sign multiple Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas from FC Barcelona and also former United keeper Mary Earps from Paris Saint-Germain. Rivals Liverpool finished 11th last season, but even they have continued to show aggression in the market.

Final thoughts

Despite this complex situation, all is not lost for United.

They have numerous talented youngsters and veterans at the club, and the signing of Andrea Medina is a shrewd one. In addition, not playing in Europe will allow United much more rest and should entail a stronger performance in the latter stages of the season.

The summer transfer window also closes on 3rd September, so there is still plenty of time to make moves in the market. Nonetheless, the board and owners need to get a grip and take prompt action to shed the image that they couldn’t care less about the fortunes of a vital part of the club.

The post Man United Women are being hung out to dry by neglectful owners appeared first on Man United News And Transfer News | The Peoples Person.

Manchester United Women had numerous players in international action throughout the course of Friday. Three United stars were called up for England’s giant matchup versus Spain in World Cup qualification.

Ella Toone

In a repeat of the Euro 2025 final and the World Cup final, Jess Park and Maya Le Tissier were left on the bench.

Ella Toone started on the right of midfield but made little impact as England were crushed 4-0 by Spain.

She was substituted after 59 minutes and replaced by Beth Mead in the England attack.

Safia Middleton-Patel

United’s second-choice keeper was called up for Welsh duty and was in the starting line-up for her nation’s 1-1 draw with Montenegro.

Mared Griffiths started on the bench, but the youngster came on in the 62nd minute and could not help her side find a winner.

Melvine Malard

United’s star Frenchwoman was critical in France’s 2-0 win over Poland.

She opened the scoring for her side early in the second half when she was played in on goal and her shot deflected into the back of the net.

Malard then played a lovely one-two with Sandy Baltimore, who smashed the ball into the roof of the net.

Julia Zigiotti

Sweden fell to a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Denmark in their World Cup qualification campaign.

Julia Zigiotti started in midfield and Anna Sandberg at left-back for the Swedes.

Both played 90 minutes, but Hanna Lundkvist was an unused substitute in the match.

Dominique Janssen

Janssen suffered heartbreak as the Netherlands lost 3-2 in a tight match to Ireland.

The United star scored a penalty in the 70th minute to equalise, but the Irish fought back to secure a priceless win.

Former United player Aoife Mannion was on the winning side for Ireland in an impressive victory.

Lea Schuller

United’s two strikers started against each other as Lea Schuller led the line for Germany and Elisabeth Terland did the same for Norway.

Both were substituted in the second half and neither could find the back of the net in Germany’s 2-0 win.

Lisa Naalsund also started in midfield for the Norwegians.

United Women stars will once again be in action on Tuesday for the final round of fixtures before the summer break.
