Manuel Ugarte: United hoping for Uruguayan to shine at the World Cup

Manchester United are desperate to revamp their engine room as Michael Carrick seeks to play a more front-foot style of football from next season.

The Red Devils have already agreed a deal with Atalanta for Ederson, but the head coach wants to add more quality to the middle of the park.

With deals for Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali falling through, INEOS are fully focused on bringing Mateus Fernandes to Old Trafford.

West Ham’s asking price and Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain’s interest have proved to be stumbling blocks, but the co-owners are confident of agreeing a deal within this month.

Manuel Ugarte has endured a disappointing spell at United

Carrick has asked INEOS to try to sign a third midfielder, with Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Tyler Adams among the potential targets.

But a move will only be feasible if Manuel Ugarte join Casemiro in leaving the club. The Uruguayan has already been informed that he is likely to be fourth choice at best should he stay.

There is interest from Turkish clubs, but the problem is that United are unlikely to recoup close to the £42 million they paid PSG for his services.

According to Sky Sports, the 20-time English league champions are banking on the defensive midfielder shining for Uruguay at the World Cup to drive up his price and potentially invite more teams to bid for him.

INEOS wants Manuel Ugarte gone, a decent World Cup could see his value skyrocket

“If Manuel Ugarte leaves then there is a possibility for United to add a third midfielder.

“United hope the Uruguay international’s performances at the World Cup will increase his value with Ugarte one of a few first team players they are expecting to move on this summer.”

Depending on how much United can fetch from a sale, they will be exploring the market, with Carlos Baleba also a possibility.

Carrick is also keeping an eye on academy talents, with quite a few set to be given a chance to impress and possibly emerge as that third midfield option.
