Manchester United Women defeated West Ham United in a 2-1 win at the Progress with Unity Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Spanish coach will be delighted with her second consecutive win and third strong performance in just over a week.

Speaking to the club’s media after the game, she lavished praise on new signing Andrea Medina, who scored her first goal for the club during the victory.

Olid said, “when you come from another country, and I include myself – I’m here in the UK five years already, but my first three months I remember were difficult. And she’s so happy from the first day and giving energy in the morning.”

The coach added, “what you see on the pitch is the same off the pitch and I’m so happy for her because she’s such a nice person, [such a] good person. She deserves all the good things that are happening to her.”

Medina has played further forward on the wing rather than at left back in recent matches, and Olid offered an explanation as to why.

The Spanish coach claimed, “when we play opposition that the full-backs go high, I think it’s good to have a kind of winger that can defend those runs too. But at the same time, I think that she has a lot to give in attack, not just crosses, in terms of coming inside, finishing and assists. I think she’s showing these last [few] games that she’s not just a defender. She can defend but she can give a lot in the final third.”

Olid also claimed that, little by little, she is seeing her style being implemented better by the players and that they are creating more chances.

Nonetheless, she still feels her side can improve at finishing chances and breaking the lines more.

United captain Maya Le Tissier also spoke to the club’s media and asserted that her side are getting better and better as the season progresses.

She explained, “yeah, of course. We’ve been starting to build some good momentum the past couple games. So, yeah, to obviously come out and win the game. Um, yeah, it’s pretty sad to be fair, obviously knowing that we conceded the pen, but yeah, they didn’t really have any chances apart from that. So, yeah, a good day.”

Le Tissier also showered her new teammate Medina with praise and stated, she’s been “so good. I didn’t think she’d be playing left wing when we signed her, but, uh, yeah, we’ve got a new position for her. I love playing with Medie. You know, she’s so aggressive in the tackle. She’s just a great person to have on the team.
So yeah, great signing. Made some great performances as well where we’ve needed her.”

The captain admitted that there has been a lot of scrutiny on the team, but they are finally living up to this pressure.

Medina also thanked the fans and said she loved the team she was playing for at the moment, as she picked up another player of the match award.

Manchester United Women star Celin Bizet recently returned to training after having a baby.

The Norwegian has since sat down with the club’s media and spoken about her feelings for the rest of the season.

When asked about how her baby and she are getting on, she said, “we’re both amazing, to be fair. It’s nice to come back and it’s the same but different, isn’t it?”

She also asserted, “it’s coming here with the girls and finally having a day where I spend it training and being social with the girls, and different going home to a baby but it’s so nice.”

Her own preparation

She explained that she did her own pre-season for six to seven weeks, but the true emotion was returning to a team session as she had not done that for eight months.

She continued, “I love being social, I get loads of energy being with the girls. So, it was nice being with the staff and the team and having a good session.”

The winger was also asked about what she thinks of new manager Eva Olid, and she was very complimentary.

She explained, “I love the way she wants to play. It’s how I want to play. Having the ball a lot and obviously defending but being more focused on having the ball and attacking football.”

Bizet also praised her character, explaining that the Catalan is a cheery person who gives off good vibes.

Speaking on her potential return to the pitch, she explained, “it will be a special day. I think it will be emotional, but it will be an amazing feeling coming back on the pitch, that’s what I’ve done since I was eight. And yeah, having Gio there? I can’t wait.”

Olid suggested that Bizet is making faster progress than expected, so we could see her on the pitch in the near future.

United kick off tomorrow afternoon in the league versus West Ham United at 13:00 BST.

Manchester United Women have turned a corner lately.

After two poor results to start the season against London City Lionesses and Chelsea, they almost snatched a victory at the Emirates Stadium last Saturday in what ended up as a 1-1 draw.

The Red Devils secured their first win of the Eva Olid era when they crushed Sheffield United 10-1 in the Players’ Cup.

Pre-match presser

United will take on West Ham United tomorrow as they return to league action, and Olid spoke to the media before the game.

The Spaniard gave a fitness update on Celin Bizet, who recently returned to training after giving birth.

She claimed, “Celin is a different situation because, initially, the performance department had a plan for her.”

The manager added, “but she’s feeling so good. She’s training so good and, probably, she will be back soon.”

Olid went on to explain, “in theory, they wanted to leave more time, because she’s just come back from having a baby, but she’s going so quick and will be back sooner than we expected.”

She continued, “still, we don’t have an exact time, but it will be quite soon.”

Further fitness updates

The head coach also added what she knows about the fitness of the rest of her side entering the match.

She stated, “we have tomorrow to check a few things [in the squad as a whole] but, in this moment, we have Ellen (Wangerheim) coming back. The rest is the same, Jayde [Riviere] and Emma [Watson] still need a little more time to come back.”

The match will kick off tomorrow afternoon at 13:00 BST at the Progress with Unity Stadium.

Manchester United Women finally kicked into gear with a stunning 10-1 victory over Sheffield United in the Subway Players’ Cup.

The Red Devils had six different goalscorers, with Mared Griffiths firing in a hat-trick.

Lea Schuller and new signing Rebeca Bernal also scored a brace each.

Speaking after the match, manager Eva Olid was clearly delighted with the attacking performance.

After the game ended, she spoke to the club media and said, “it’s so important, our first win together, and yeah I enjoy when we have the ball and having the possession and creating chances.

She continued, “it was a good match to keep building what we want to build in attack, and keep working in the identity we want to create in attack. All the matches are important and this one was a good opportunity.”

Olid arrived at the club with a reputation for trusting young players, and the likes of Griffiths and Jess Simpson repaid that faith with outstanding performances.

The Spanish coach explained, “that is the thing that makes me the most happy, seeing the young players happy and having their opportunity to show what they can do. I didn’t have any doubt about them because they show [their quality] in training. But for me, the hat-trick of Maz, she’s so good at creating chances and scoring goals.”

Commenting further on her interaction with Griffiths, she asserted, “not a long time ago, I spoke with her and I said that I believe in her and she can give a lot in attack. But we need to work on the defensive side, but I knew today was a match for her because she’s a technical player and she’s so forward-thinking.”

Olid also stated that Simpson needs to stay at the club so they can use her throughout the season, after developing well in the second division last year.

The head coach also praised new signing Monica Jusu Bah, even though she did not end up on the scoresheet. She explained, “she came for that profile of player that is fast and has speed to break the line to run behind, probably we were missing this profile of player. We were missing this little [bit of] speed and she came to give us something different. I thought today was a good match for her to grow in confidence.”

Olid also joked she would like to rest her captain Maya Le Tissier but that she is always fit and available to play, and trains so hard it would be difficult to ever leave her out.

It hasn’t been the best start to the season after losing to London City and getting thrashed 0-5 by Chelsea.

Nonetheless, a much improved display saw United take a point from Arsenal on Saturday and they will enter the cup tie with fresh optimism.

Canadian Simi Awujo scored her first league goal in the loss to London City and will hope to get game time against Sheffield United tomorrow.

She spoke to there club’s website ahead of the match.

Interview

Awujo grew up learning Spanish in Georgia as a child and explained how she has used this knowledge to the squad’s advantage.

She explained, “yeah, Medi’s (Andrea Medina) quite out there. I think it seemed quite easy for her to just mesh with everyone because she’s just a good personality – lots of fun! But yeah, I do speak Spanish. I would say I’m proficient, I wouldn’t say fully fluent just because I’ve never lived there or anything.”

The midfielder added, “but I can have conversations with Medi and Rebe (Rebeca Bernal) as well now, in Spanish.”

The Canada international explained that she was first interested in school but then started to watch TV and learn from that linguistic source as well.

United reached the final of the League Cup last season but were defeated by Chelsea in the final.

Awujo explained that the club are determined to go one step further and said, “as professionals that’s always the goal, to win as much as you can – I don’t think any of that has changed. Obviously, we’re not in Champions League this year, the FA Cup hasn’t started so I guess in terms of winning silverware the Players Cup is our focus as well as the league right now. Then obviously when the FA Cup comes around the same will apply for that, we’re always striving to win the most games and win as much silverware as possible.”

Interestingly, the game will also be played on Awujo’s birthday and she will certainly hope it is one to remember.

The Red Devils were seconds away from a vital away win at the Emirates but they were pegged back in the final minute of stoppage time in a 1-1 draw.

Nonetheless, manager Eva Olid will have much to be positive about, especially in comparison to the club’s earlier matches against London City and Chelsea.

United start off their League Cup campaign on Wednesday night against Sheffield United and the Spanish head coach will he hoping for her first win as United boss.

Speaking to the media ahead of the match she stressed that the game will be a good opportunity to build on the defensive stability they are trying to create but also work on some attacking patterns.

She also admitted that with no Champions League teams in the competition, it is a good opportunity for the club to go far.

Olid stated that of course one of her main aims is to take the club back into Europe but that the League Cup is also a big target. She explained, “yes, of course. At the end of the day, we want to win trophies. The cups are a really good opportunity for us this season to try to win another trophy for the team.”

She continued, “I know the team already has one cup, and winning another this season would be amazing.”

Commenting on the unique challenges of cup football Olid stated, “I think second-division teams are always hard to beat because they defend very well and they fight.”

Olid continued, “but I think it’s a good match, as you say, to build our attacking play, and it’s going to be a good opportunity to improve.”

She finally stated that the team specifically needs to work on penetrating the back lines of the opposition’s defence and that she hopes to see progress in this department on Wednesday night.

Manchester United Women took a big step forward with an impressive 1-1 draw with Arsenal Women at the Emirates.

Impressive display

The Reds had started the season in poor fashion, losing 1-2 to London City Lionesses and then 0-5 to Chelsea at home last weekend.

They were much, much better yesterday though and showed much more of what Eva Olid will be demanding of them against the 2025 European champions.

Both captain Maya Le Tissier and new signing Andrea Medina played a key role in the game and they were speaking to Sky Sports after the match.

Speaking directly after the match, the captain stated that she felt the performance at the Emirates was much more reflective of her side than last week’s display against Chelsea.

She explained, “yeah, obviously last week wasn’t us at all. It was awful, and we hold our hands up to that. We were hurting this week, but we got to training, worked on that, and came out a completely different side.”

Le Tissier continued, “we had a lot of honest conversations with the staff and with ourselves about how we want to play, and yeah, we’ve come out a different team tonight. Obviously, we’re gutted to concede right at the end, but it was a big improvement.”

Le Tissier also explained that it had been a tough week but that today was much more similar to their usual standards and that is what they will strive for and better in the future.

The captain admitted that it was a kick in the teeth to concede so late but the team had to take solace in a much better defensive display.

She commented, “obviously, we’re gutted, but the performance we can be proud of. We can really build on that. I thought it was a much more us performance. We don’t want to sit back in games. It doesn’t matter who we play against. We want to be out there, and if we concede goals, we concede goals.”

New signing Medina was shy to speak much English but she was rewarded with the player of the match award and stated, “Oh, thank you so much. I’m very happy for this, for my team. We are such good players. We need to win, I know, but this is a performance to improve.”

United will next be in action against Sheffield United in the League Cup on Wednesday.

Manchester United Women showed a much improved side of themselves in a 1-1 draw with Arsenal.

The Red Devils showed much more defensive solidity than they previously had in a 0-5 loss to Chelsea last weekend. They took the lead in the second half when great pressing resulted in Swede Julia Zigiotti firing the visitors in front.

It was heartbreak for the Red Devils when Smilla Holmberg equalised in the 95th minute at the Emirates, but it was a massive step in the right direction for Eva Olid’s side.

Speaking after the match to the club’s website, she was clearly delighted with her side’s efforts.

After conceding seven goals in her first two matches as head coach, Olid claimed, “after losing 5-0, the focus this week has been on the defensive shape, the tactics in defence and the basics in defence.”

Building on what she said, Olid added, “I think the attack will come. Implementing a new style of play needs time, but the effort, the hard work and the intensity can never be missing, and that’s what was missing in the first two matches.”

She also claimed she was happy that the players seemed to take that message on board and that “little by little, we will improve the attacking side.”

The head coach also stated that she was happy with the work and effort, but in the long term, she is here to create a side who can generate many more chances.

Giving a peek into the future, she explained, “I’m here to create more chances and be a team that can build from the back, but at the same time can be vertical and aggressive going forward, break the lines and make penetrations. That is our idea. It needs time, but I think today is the minimum that we have to deliver in a match. As I say, I hope we can improve the attack little by little.”

Olid did praise her side’s ability to keep the ball, but said that in the future, they need to be more penetrating with the ball in their possession. She explained, “I think the last 10 or 15 minutes were so difficult to defend. I always think that we need to try to have the ball in that moment, but we were just throwing the ball forward and defending.”

The Spanish coach was also philosophical about Arsenal’s late equaliser that denied her first three points in English football.

She explained, “that is another thing that we need to improve. When we are winning 1-0, we need to try to get the ball more. Because the time is passing and we were just throwing the ball forward and defending. Against Arsenal, it can happen. You can see that.”

United will be in action again this Wednesday evening at 19:00 BST against Sheffield United in the League Cup.

Manchester United Women boss Eva Olid was speaking to the press ahead of her team facing Arsenal tomorrow evening.

After a disheartening 0-5 loss to Chelsea last weekend, Olid explained to reporters what her message was to her players this week.

She explained, “my main message has been about being themselves. I don’t think they’ve shown who they are or what they can do in the first two matches. It’s important that they feel comfortable and show what they’re capable of. We had a day to reflect and analyse the game, looking at what we can do better. We know what we need to improve, and that’s important going into Saturday.”

The Spaniard admitted that while she is trying to implement a new style, the team cannot forget what they were good at last season and perhaps the team can try to introduce new concepts bit by bit.

She added, “maybe the players have been overthinking and trying to do too much. In the end, they don’t express themselves as well as they can. I see them in training, but in matches, I see a different version of the players.”

Olid stated that in spite of the results, preseason had gone well and “we need to bring back what we were doing well, build confidence, and gradually implement the new style. Finding that balance is important.”

Outside pressure

Speaking out on media pressure over the job she has done so far, she was philosophical about it.

The former Heart of Midlothian coach added, “I think constructive criticism is normal, and I understand it because our first two performances haven’t been good. We are the first ones who aren’t happy with those performances. But there’s another part that I don’t understand: people wanting too much, too soon. I don’t think people who understand football believe that the beginning defines the rest of the season.”

Olid continued, “our difficult moment is coming at the start, but I think we’re learning and growing as a team. Difficult moments help you grow. When we get through this difficult moment and build momentum, I think we’ll be much better than we would have been without experiencing it.”

The Catalan coach is under no illusion over the difficulty of facing the Gunners tomorrow, but she is also approaching the task with optimism.

She claimed, “they’re one of the best teams in the world. They’re a really good team with a big squad. It doesn’t matter who’s playing; they’ll have top players and a top coach. But we need to focus on ourselves. The most important thing on Saturday is to improve our performance and start showing who we want to be.”

Olid also stated that she wants her team to try to remember the defensive solidity they achieved in previous seasons and to build on that in this campaign.

Finally, the boss stated that there were no fresh injury updates and that Jayde Riviere and Emma Watson are both still on the sidelines.

Former Manchester United Women star Leah Galton has joined a new club.

United career

Galton started her career at Leeds United before joining Sky Blue FC in 2016.

After spending a year at Bayern Munich, she joined Manchester United in 2018 as soon as the club was set up for its inaugural season.

Galton spent eight seasons at the club, winning the FA Cup in 2024, which remains the club’s only major trophy to date.

The winger played 172 times for the club, scoring 44 goals in all competitions.

Post-United

It was announced at the end of last season that the English winger would not be continuing with the club as her contract was not extended.

Burnley Women’s official website has announced that Galton will be playing in the second division this season.

The site reported, “Burnley Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of former Manchester United stalwart Leah Galton.”

They added, “having left the Red Devils as their second-highest goal scorer ever at the end of last season, the winger has signed a one-year Burnley contract with the Clarets possessing a 12-month extension option.”

Commenting on the move, Galton stated, “it’s very, very exciting actually! I wasn’t too sure what was going to happen, but Burnley have come in for me and I absolutely said yes, so I’m excited to get started.”

She complimented the training ground at the Clarets’ disposal and asserted to her new supporters that, “I’m going to work very hard and give everything I can to this club.”

Burnley currently sit ninth in the table after a draw and a loss from their opening two matches.

Galton will certainly have an eye on the second division side’s upcoming fixture against her former side Manchester United on 28th October in the Women’s League Cup group stage.
