Manchester United have turned down approaches from a host of clubs, including Premier League rivals Aston Villa, for Mason Mount as Michael Carrick has big plans for the 27-year-old midfielder next season, according to a new report.

Long Line Of Suitors

Alongside Aston Villa, TEAMtalk claims Manchester United have “knocked back” enquiries for Mount from two other English clubs, Fulham and Newcastle United.

There is also interest from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, while two Serie A heavyweights – Inter Milan and Napoli – have both “explored the possibility of a deal” as well.

A report relayed by The Peoples Person last week claimed AC Milan had also made advances after appointing Ruben Amorim, who is a huge fan of the Englishman following his time at Old Trafford.

Well-placed sources indicate these teams have “checked on [Mount’s] availability in recent weeks”, only to be met with a firm response that he is “not available for transfer.”

Despite a torrid run of injuries and inconsistent form since arriving in M16 from Chelsea for £55 million in 2023, there is said to be “no appetite” to see him depart – with Carrick eyeing a new role for the Portsmouth native moving forward.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="1ffbae35d432d0d71911ca2a0b209fbb" image-id="prsiZxHajABb" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3130px; aspect-ratio: 3130/2087;" ></smartframe-embed>

New Role Under Carrick

Having largely played as a No.10 or out wide throughout his career, United signed Mount – at the request of then-manager Erik ten Hag – to play in central midfield alongside Casemiro.

And while the bold experiment ultimately cost the mad Dutch scientist his job, Carrick is set to run the test again in his first full campaign as head coach, though this may be a decision forced upon him as much by circumstance as by will.

In the final game of last season – the 3-0 win away to Brighton & Hove Albion – Carrick deployed Mount in a double pivot next to Kobbie Mainoo. The result was an impressive performance from Mount, showcasing the skillset which has made him a favourite under each of his managers, at club and international level.

“Carrick remains a huge admirer of the midfielder and believes there is still a top-class player waiting to emerge once he is able to enjoy an uninterrupted run of fitness. The Man Utd boss values Mount’s intelligence, tactical flexibility and work ethic, while the midfielder also remains a hugely popular figure within the dressing room,” TEAMtalk reveals.

Carrick intends to utilise Mount in this deeper position next season, given his favoured role as No.10 will be taken by Bruno Fernandes until the day the Portuguese talisman decides he no longer wants it. If it is successful, it would prove a genius move by the head coach to add another option to a depleted unit.

But there is a sense United’s failure to land their leading targets in midfield, such as Elliot Anderson, Mateus Fernandes and Aurelien Tchouameni, could be forcing Carrick’s hand to find solutions internally.

However, United are set to seal two new additions in the form of Andrey Santos – signed from Chelsea for £50 million – and Youri Tielemans, with a £35m agreement reached with Aston Villa, offering much more optimism over INEOS’s midfield rebuild this summer.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBv83Huf7P" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4000px; aspect-ratio: 4000/6000;" ></smartframe-embed>

Final Thoughts

It is hard to look at the £55m deal to bring Mount to Old Trafford as anything other than an expensive error, particularly when his £250,000 a week wage packet is factored in. But he remains a positive influence in the dressing room, and a player with the versatility and intelligence to function as a Swiss Army knife for Carrick, even if he is yet to show his sharpness on a consistent basis in a red shirt.

Manchester United star Mason Mount is reportedly poised to be used in a new role by Michael Carrick ahead of next season.

Midfield overhaul

United are in the process of overhauling their midfield as they prepare to play in the Champions League and potentially mount a title charge.

Casemiro has already left following the expiry of his contract. The five-time Champions League winner is expected to join David Beckham’s Major League Soccer club Inter Miami.

Manuel Ugarte is currently dealing with an ACL injury which he suffered while playing for Uruguay before their World Cup elimination. Ugarte, who was earmarked to be sold, is expected to be out for several months.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="84d65181a95c24c4fea73e44b4e27a17" image-id="ltKDwPgPM18c" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2498px; aspect-ratio: 2498/1665;" ></smartframe-embed>

This leaves Kobbie Mainoo as the only senior and fit central midfielder on the club’s books. While England are faring well at the World Cup, Mainoo has yet to get a taste of the action. He, alongside Ivan Toney of the Saudi Pro League and late call-up Trevoh Chalobah, are the only players yet to feature for the Three Lions.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="1ffbae35d432d0d71911ca2a0b209fbb" image-id="prsi38wsLfyA" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2830px; aspect-ratio: 2830/3200;" ></smartframe-embed>

United agreed a fee with Chelsea for Andrey Santos, whose official announcement is imminent. A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Santos will wear the number 17 shirt at Old Trafford.

Then there is the drama involving Ederson. United struck an agreement with Atalanta for Ederson, but the deal getting over the line was subject to him passing his medical. Reports surfaced hinting at a possible underlying problem, prompting the need for a more thorough examination of the situation.

On Friday, Fabrizio Romano revealed that United have pulled the plug on the transfer. Ederson has since left the UK and is said to be disappointed with how events unfolded.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBZcTvukgb" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3138px; aspect-ratio: 3138/3000;" ></smartframe-embed>

United are still eyeing midfield reinforcements, with the likes of Ayyoub Bouaddi, Manu Kone, Adam Wharton, Alex Scott and Carlos Baleba all believed to be on their radar.

Now, Samuel Luckhurst of The Sun reveals that Mount is set to be deployed a little differently under Carrick, who has a distinct plan for him.

Fresh role

Luckhurst writes, “MASON MOUNT is prepared to occupy a deeper role at Manchester United to ease their midfield crisis.”

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="e8c3ce70f1ad837bdffb21e2453272b6" image-id="XhXPIAzEvUZl" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4305px; aspect-ratio: 4305/3229;" ></smartframe-embed>

“Mount’s positive impact towards the end of last season has effectively safeguarded his future and United head coach Michael Carrick values his work rate and versatility.”

It’s understood that with Mainoo enjoying an extended break from the club, Mount looks likely to be handed the starting midfield role when United’s pre-season fixtures kick off.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="1ffbae35d432d0d71911ca2a0b209fbb" image-id="prsidaiR2GCc" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3000px; aspect-ratio: 3000/2000;" ></smartframe-embed>

Mount made 23 Premier League appearances in the 2025/26 season. He contributed three goals in that period.

Manchester United returned to pre-season yesterday after approximately six weeks off following the end of the 2025/2026 season.

Success

The Red Devils stuttered at the start of last season, but after the sacking of Ruben Amorim, their season took off.

Michael Carrick replaced the Portuguese coach in January, and United responded with much more consistent results.

They rose to third in the table and qualified for this season’s edition of the Champions League.

World Cup

United have had numerous players involved in the World Cup over the last month, but with the quarter-finals beginning, more and more are returning to the squad.

Noussair Mazraoui is the latest player to be knocked out after Morocco were defeated 2-0 by France.

Carrington Return

Nonetheless, players involved at the World Cup will return gradually over the month, depending on when their nation departed the tournament.

The Manchester Evening News reported, “Harry Amass and Shea Lacey are among the Manchester United youngsters to report for pre-season training at Carrington.”

Academy stars Tyler Fredericson and Jack Fletcher have also returned to training ahead of United’s first pre-season game in just eight days, against Wrexham in Helsinki, Finland.

Toby Collyer, who spent last season on loan at West Bromwich Albion and Hull City, was also being put through his paces.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="1ffbae35d432d0d71911ca2a0b209fbb" image-id="prsiqQjTfTF1" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4660px; aspect-ratio: 4660/3106;" ></smartframe-embed>

Senior stars

The paper added, “there was a sprinkling of first-team stars present. Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Mason Mount were all present having missed out on England selection for the World Cup, as was Ayden Heaven.”

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="1ffbae35d432d0d71911ca2a0b209fbb" image-id="prsiPGB4hjAU" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3440px; aspect-ratio: 3440/3408;" ></smartframe-embed>

First-team players Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee were also back after they were left out of their respective nations’ World Cup squads.

Recent signings Patrick Dorgu, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko were also all back at Carrington, raring to go. Dermot Mee is also part of the group after recently agreeing a new deal.

Manchester United’s Manuel Ugarte has experienced an exceptionally challenging 12 months.

Difficult moments

Ugarte’s first 12 months after signing from Paris Saint-Germain were tough but showed some signs of promise at Manchester United.

Nonetheless, his second season was nothing short of a disaster.

The Uruguayan barely played any football in the second half of the season as he struggled with United only playing once a week and Michael Carrick sticking to his tried and trusted partnership of Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBDnZPJxtY" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4000px; aspect-ratio: 4000/6000;" ></smartframe-embed>

As a result, Ugarte was on the transfer chopping block as Manchester United aimed to raise further funds for the transfer window.

Unfortunately, disaster struck in the World Cup when, during his nation’s 1-0 loss to Spain, Ugarte collided with his own teammate and suffered a severe injury.

It has since been confirmed that the midfielder has suffered knee ligament damage and will be out of action for months.

Ugarte responded to the news on social media, referring to it as hitting rock bottom and saying that he will never forget missing out on such an important match for his country.

Nonetheless, he took a philosophical approach and claimed he would be back stronger than ever, thanking his national team and, of course, his club, Manchester United, for their ongoing support during this difficult time.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBHwtxKqKA" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4439px; aspect-ratio: 4439/2960;" ></smartframe-embed>

United teammates rally around

Ugarte was also shown support by his teammates, who expressed their reactions to the horrific injury.

Club captain Bruno Fernandes responded, “we’re here for whatever, brother.”

Mason Mount also added his support by saying, “all here for you brother.”

Bryan Mbeumo expressed the same sentiment, posting in Spanish, “with you brother.”

Joshua Zirkzee also commented in Spanish, “much strength bro” and “Godspeed!”

Numerous other players, such as Matthijs de Ligt, Patrick Dorgu and Leny Yoro, posted heart emojis to highlight their support for their teammate in these tough times.

Despite multiple managers attempting to integrate Mason Mount into Manchester United’s plans, none have quite determined the Englishman’s optimal role.

It was a surprise to see the Red Devils splash £55 million to sign him from Chelsea back in 2023 considering his best position was just behind the striker.

At United, Bruno Fernandes occupied that role and there was no chance the England international would usurp the Portuguese superstar.

Yet, then-boss Erik ten Hag greenlit the deal, and initially, played him alongside Casemiro in midfield. It is safe to say, that experiment failed miserably.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBIcVgools" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 1710px; aspect-ratio: 1710/2564;" ></smartframe-embed>

Mason Mount has struggled since joining United

United were routinely overrun in midfield, and his injury problems exacerbated those issues even further.

Ruben Amorim seemed to be the head coach who utilised the former Chelsea ace in his best position, sacrificing the team captain in the process.

Fernandes playing in a deeper role hindered the team’s attack, and eventually, Amorim was shown the door, and in came Michael Carrick.

The current head coach has utilised the United No. 7 as a substitute and as a deep-lying playmaker, and while the 27-year-old has tried gamely, his attributes are not suited to playing in a double pivot.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="04742eb90cefa12a5e3ab9bae92c2b93" image-id="neimtaQmlx54" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3636px; aspect-ratio: 3636/2424;" ></smartframe-embed>

Amorim keen on reunion

This is why rumours have floated that the 20-time English league champions could be ready to offload Mason Mount, with Amorim eyeing a spectacular reunion with the versatile midfielder.

However, following Manuel Ugarte’s injury and given the sheer number of matches United are set to play in next season, INEOS are in no mood to sell the Portsmouth-born ace, as revealed by The Manchester Evening News.

“There has been no contact between AC Milan and Mason Mount’s camp, despite a report from Italy claiming the Manchester United midfielder had been offered to the Italian club.

“Former United head coach Ruben Amorim was recently appointed by Milan. Amorim was a huge admirer of Mount during his time in charge at Old Trafford, but the 27-year-old is expected to stay put in Manchester.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="1ffbae35d432d0d71911ca2a0b209fbb" image-id="prsidaiR2GCc" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3000px; aspect-ratio: 3000/2000;" ></smartframe-embed>

United’s stance revealed

“Sources close to Mount were surprised to read a claim that he had been offered to Milan this weekend. Mount has been busy training in Spain with an individual coach before United’s players are called back to Carrington to report for pre-season. He is focused on getting the new campaign off to a good start.

“United’s schedule will return to normal in 2026/2027 as the club competes in four competitions – the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup – and Mount is seen as an important senior player.”

This could all be part of an elaborate ploy to up his asking price. Mason Mount is unlikely to be first choice when all the other players are fit.

Carrick remains a supporter, but given his poor injury record and massive wages, moving him on would be the ideal scenario for both parties. But if INEOS’ transfer plans suffer because of Ugarte, the No. 7 jersey holder might finally need to step up after three underwhelming seasons.

Former Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is now spearheading AC Milan’s rebuild, with the Rossoneri keen to make a statement of intent in the transfer market.

Milan have already handed Amorim a high-profile striker in Paris Saint-Germain’s Goncalo Ramos, having agreed a club-record deal to secure the Portuguese’s services.

Milan have also been linked with Manuel Ugarte, but his serious injury in the World Cup may have an impact on his future. Accordingly, the Serie A giants are now eyeing another United player.

AC Milan willing to sign Mason Mount

According to Milanpress.it, Manchester United attacking midfielder Mason Mount has been offered to AC Milan.

It is understood Ruben Amorim has immediately given the green light to begin possible negotiations with United for Mount.

An exchange of information is already underway, with the England international valued at around £21.5m. There is a belief the fee can be negotiated lower.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="04742eb90cefa12a5e3ab9bae92c2b93" image-id="ARCH796049_00356319" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3140px; aspect-ratio: 3140/2090;" ></smartframe-embed>

It is claimed Mount does not feel part of Michael Carrick’s project, having struggled to replace Bruno Fernandes as the Red Devils’ creator in chief.

At San Siro, the 27-year-old could be played alongside Christian Pulisic behind marquee signing Goncalo Ramos to create a new-look attacking unit.

Manchester United should offload Amorim’s “perfect” player

The ex-United head coach said that Mount was “perfect” for his system during the early days of his reign at Old Trafford. “Mason Mount. I have to tell you I love that kid. You can look in his eyes that he wants this so bad, and this is the most important thing for me,” he said in an interview.

However, Amorim failed to effectively implement his ideas and the Englishman continued to struggle for fitness and a stable role under the Portuguese tactician.

United should certainly consider the possibility of cashing in on the former Chelsea playmaker, with the club keen to revamp their midfield.

Mount is not going to provide genuine competition to Fernandes and he lacks defensive acumen and physicality to partner Kobbie Mainoo in a double pivot. He is also one of the highest paid players at United. As such, Amorim could end up doing a huge favour for his former employers.

Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount has got his preparations for the new season underway.

United career

After winning the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021 and breaking into the England squad, Mount moved to Manchester United in 2023.

Unfortunately, it has not been the easiest of times for Mount.

When he has played, he has looked a solid, intelligent player, but Mount’s biggest issue has been staying on the pitch.

In three seasons, he has played just 72 matches for the club and scored only seven goals.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="1ffbae35d432d0d71911ca2a0b209fbb" image-id="prsiZxHajABb" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3130px; aspect-ratio: 3130/2087;" ></smartframe-embed>

Pre-season preparations

Manchester United are set to begin their pre-season preparations on 9th July at Carrington, but some of the players have been putting in work early.

Leny Yoro has already been pictured working hard, and Mason Mount has published videos on Instagram of himself getting ready for the new season.

Mount is working with Dr Tom King, a performance coach who previously worked as Liverpool’s first-team fitness coach.

King is the owner of King Performance Ideology and also holds a PhD in Applied Sports Science. The specialist has worked with a number of elite-level athletes.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" image-id="esmeU2dsfTzP" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 8005px; aspect-ratio: 8005/5337;" ></smartframe-embed>

Mount can be seen in the videos below going through his paces with the performance specialist in Spain.

There is a mixture of gym work and conditioning, as well as videos of Mount perfecting his shooting and passing techniques.

The 27-year-old will be hoping this is the season when he can finally stay fit and show his true worth to the Manchester United side.

Mount has already spoken about how he is prepared to play in different positions for Michael Carrick and Manchester United, and the team will need that flexibility as they are set to embark on a gruelling schedule in four separate competitions, including the Champions League.

Man United are keen to revolutionise their midfield, and Mason Mount is keen to hand them an interesting solution in that bid.

Ahead of next season, Manchester United are expected to reshape their midfield into one capable of challenging on multiple fronts.

There is a desire to replace Casemiro, who is leaving as a free agent, while the club also needs to upgrade on Manuel Ugarte, who has failed to click at the heart of United’s engine room.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="04742eb90cefa12a5e3ab9bae92c2b93" image-id="neimRKoiVYXL" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4798px; aspect-ratio: 4798/3204;" ></smartframe-embed>

As a result, two, if not three, midfield signings may be needed to satisfy United’s transfer needs.

Ederson closing in on move

The Ederson deal is all but agreed; it is only a matter of when the announcement comes.

With the Brazilian expected to be the first of several midfield arrivals, all eyes are on who follows him.

Mateus Fernandes next

There is talk of United now working on a deal for Mateus Fernandes, with ambitious West Ham United demanding as much as £80 million to sanction his move to Manchester.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="e8c3ce70f1ad837bdffb21e2453272b6" image-id="XhXPADZmvGzt" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 1432px; aspect-ratio: 1432/1431;" ></smartframe-embed>

Should Fernandes arrive for such a staggering figure, it will be interesting to see whether United still push for another marquee midfield signing.

Mason Mount eyes key role in Man United’s midfield rebuild

As per The Sun, “Mason Mount, whose only starts under Carrick came away to Sunderland and Brighton in midfield last month, is willing to continue in that deeper role.”

Well, after Ederson and Fernandes, do United really need to go all out for another midfielder, particularly given Mount’s push for a deeper midfield role?

A midfield role is so demanding. Mount has demonstrated the technical ability to operate there, and when called upon, he filled in for Casemiro perfectly, arguably better than Ugarte ever managed. However, his showing against Brighton, impressive as it was, makes one wonder whether he can stay fit and replicate it. Can he remain available in a role that demands physicality?

Injuries Mount’s undoing at United

Injuries have been central to the Englishman’s struggles at United. If he can avoid them, the 27-year-old has the quality to become one of the Red Devils’ best players.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="04742eb90cefa12a5e3ab9bae92c2b93" image-id="ARCH796049_00356319" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3140px; aspect-ratio: 3140/2090;" ></smartframe-embed>

It will be tricky, but the hope is that this role change brings with it the luck he needs to stay fit, redefine himself, and contribute meaningfully to United’s midfield, starting in a deeper role before gradually transitioning into a playmaker role and becoming the ready-made heir to Bruno Fernandes when the time comes.

Manchester United will need to be ruthless when it comes to player sales in order to raise enough cash to reinforce across the pitch.

INEOS have certainly improved on that front compared to their predecessors, but the team still has quite a bit of deadwood that needs clearing.

The summer of 2023 was among the worst in the club’s recent history, and almost all the big signings who arrived in that window find themselves on the periphery.

Andre Onana, regarded by many fans as one of the worst goalkeepers seen at the club, is on his way out, with Trabzonspor keen on extending his loan.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="04742eb90cefa12a5e3ab9bae92c2b93" image-id="neimt6gzaD7H" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 1907px; aspect-ratio: 1907/2864;" ></smartframe-embed>

Injury record of Mason Mount remains a huge concern

Rasmus Hojlund is set to stay with Napoli, while plenty would also want Mason Mount to be offloaded once the transfer window opens.

While the Englishman would like to stay, the truth is that he is simply too injury-prone. Signed for an initial transfer fee of £55 million, the former Chelsea ace has hardly ever been available.

In three seasons, the United No.7 has managed a meagre 31 starts across all competitions, missing 69 matches due to injuries.

It seemed like his luck was finally changing under Ruben Amorim, but familiar problems soon returned, and in the end, he managed only two starts under Michael Carrick.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="04742eb90cefa12a5e3ab9bae92c2b93" image-id="neimoJIhbrEL" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3987px; aspect-ratio: 3987/2660;" ></smartframe-embed>

Carrick still has faith in Mason Mount

Yet, The Athletic have claimed that the newly-announced permanent head coach seems to be a fan of his versatility, and with the Red Devils set to play in four competitions next season, Carrick feels there could be space in the squad for Mason Mount.

The 27-year-old has played as a false nine, attacking midfielder, and even a deep-lying playmaker this season, which corroborates the head coach’s thinking.

“Carrick is also known to think the positional flexibility of Mason Mount and Noussair Mazraoui is beneficial to his squad heading into a campaign of four competitions.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="1ffbae35d432d0d71911ca2a0b209fbb" image-id="prsi6246QBaP" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2700px; aspect-ratio: 2700/1800;" ></smartframe-embed>

Last chance for Mason Mount

“Mount started in deep midfield at Sunderland and Brighton & Hove Albion in Casemiro’s absence, playing superbly at the Amex Stadium today (Sunday), but recruiting a No 6 (or two), is obviously United’s top priority in the summer market.”

While the Portsmouth-born star struggled against the Black Cats, he did improve against the Seagulls. It will be interesting to see how many minutes he earns next season should he end up staying.

Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount produced an inspired performance to help his side to a commanding 3-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion.

United sign off in style

United wrapped up the 2025/26 campaign superbly as they put Brighton to the sword at the Amex Stadium.

Patrick Dorgu broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute, heading home a sublime corner-kick delivery from Bruno Fernandes. Michael Carrick named Dorgu on the left wing in place of Matheus Cunha, who remained an unused substitute.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="1ffbae35d432d0d71911ca2a0b209fbb" image-id="prsi4kYhTkKN" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2154px; aspect-ratio: 2154/3101;" ></smartframe-embed>

The assist saw Fernandes eclipse Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry to become the player with the most assists (21) in a single Premier League season.

Bryan Mbeumo doubled United’s advantage moments before the break as he finished off a brilliant team move with a simple tap-in. United picked up where they left off in the second half as Fernandes netted a sensational strike in the 47th minute to snuff out whatever hopes the Seagulls may have harboured of mounting a comeback.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="1ffbae35d432d0d71911ca2a0b209fbb" image-id="prsiSy3NjXQa" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 1811px; aspect-ratio: 1811/1208;" ></smartframe-embed>

The Red Devils laid siege to Brighton’s goal but they were mostly thwarted by Bart Verbruggen, who produced save after save.

There were multiple United players who did well, including Mount.

Mount’s display

Carrick confirmed before the game that Casemiro had already played his last game for United and would therefore not feature against Brighton. The United boss opted for Mount to slot alongside Kobbie Mainoo in the pivot and the pair combined brilliantly.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="1ffbae35d432d0d71911ca2a0b209fbb" image-id="prsi870Ovg1p" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2700px; aspect-ratio: 2700/1800;" ></smartframe-embed>

During the time he was on the pitch before he was replaced by Tyler Fletcher, Mount managed to find his teammates with 37 of the 43 passes he attempted (86% pass accuracy). One of these was a key pass. He found his intended target with two of the three long balls he pinged.

The England international touched the ball 58 times and drew three fouls.

He made six defensive contributions. Mount won two of the four tackles he put in. He contributed a further one clearance and as many interceptions.

The 27-year-old registered seven recoveries and emerged victorious in seven of the eight ground duels he contested.
