Manchester United are gearing up to face Leeds at Croke Park on Wednesday in what will be their penultimate friendly ahead of the start of the new Premier League campaign.

Currently, all the players are busy at County Kildare, where Michael Carrick is conducting an intensive training camp with the whole group.

Even Marcus Rashford, who last played for the club almost two years ago, is present, with the Mancunian expected to play against AC Milan at the weekend.

The game has taken on added significance as it will pit the Carrington graduate against the head coach who had kicked him out of the club, Ruben Amorim.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="04742eb90cefa12a5e3ab9bae92c2b93" image-id="ARCH554056_00277199" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5907px; aspect-ratio: 5907/3938;" ></smartframe-embed>

Marcus Rashford remains keen to leave despite Carrick extending an olive branch

Carrick is keen to work with the Englishman, while INEOS are unhappy owing to the player earning the highest wages among the entire squad.

The Mirror have reported that the England international remains keen to leave the club before the end of the summer window.

25/26 season stats

He is planning to hold talks with Carrick after both friendlies are done. The versatile attacker feels there has been too much bad blood between him and his boyhood club, and he is keen to play abroad.

“Marcus Rashford is still keen to find an escape route from Manchester United. But Rashford might have to go abroad again – because his hopes of remaining in the Premier League look slim.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="1ffbae35d432d0d71911ca2a0b209fbb" image-id="prsiEisGXdP2" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3879px; aspect-ratio: 3879/2586;" ></smartframe-embed>

Marcus Rashford feels there is too much bad blood between him and the club

“Rashford has returned to pre-season training at Carrington following his summer break after the World Cup. He is planning to hold talks with manager Michael Carrick once the squad returns from its commitments in Dublin.

“It’s understood Rashford would prefer to find a new club – and continue to revive his career elsewhere.

“He believes there has been too much bad blood between him and his hometown club. And he knows there is still time in the summer window for him to negotiate a deal with someone else which suits him.”

Barcelona opted against signing him permanently, instead offering United another loan proposal, which INEOS promptly turned down.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="1ffbae35d432d0d71911ca2a0b209fbb" image-id="prsiizOTyGcO" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2458px; aspect-ratio: 2458/1639;" ></smartframe-embed>

Marcus Rashford and United running out of options

Bayern Munich are unlikely to match the current wages of Marcus Rashford, while the forward is keen not to move to Turkiye at this stage of his career despite interest from several clubs.

The Old Trafford side could do with the 28-year-old, with Carrick currently looking for a left-winger. But the player and INEOS both want the same thing.

Marcus Rashford and United are both running out of time to find an acceptable solution. It will be interesting to see where the player ends up once the window slams shut.

Manchester United’s attempts at signing a left-back who can eventually succeed Luke Shaw has not exactly gone according to plan.

The Englishman did start every Premier League game all season, but considering his poor injury record, INEOS are right to think about the future.

Surprisingly, Harry Amass has been deemed to be not good enough, with the Red Devils scouring the market for the ideal replacement.

Newcastle’s Lewis Hall is seen as the dream recruit, and while the England international remains keen to join, the Magpies are in no mood to let go of their left-back.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="7cb01038c3a13bcbaf0de8af7020f6a5" image-id="8FQbdhvqTD72" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4000px; aspect-ratio: 4000/2664;" ></smartframe-embed>

David Raum emerges as an alternative option

As a result, INEOS have been forced to look at alternatives, both within the Premier League and across Europe.

RB Leipzig’s David Raum is one name that has emerged as an option, with the German’s current deal expiring next year.

The 28-year-old has a release clause of around £34 million, but given his contract situation, the 20-time English league champions feel a deal is doable for less than £30 million.

Interestingly, TEAMtalk have revealed that the Germany international has spoken to United in the past, and is even open to competing with Shaw for a first team spot.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="6dfbdbe8ed6ff2eb8f8e8ee3c2cef8f4" image-id="wennYxbdjgLu" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4764px; aspect-ratio: 4764/3252;" ></smartframe-embed>

Attractive price tag

“One name already high on their list is RB Leipzig’s David Raum, with TEAMtalk having revealed earlier this year that the Germany international is admired by United.

“The 28-year-old is considered an attractive option given his contract situation. Raum has less than 12 months remaining on his current deal and, although he has a release clause of around £34million.

“Intermediaries believe a deal below £30million could potentially be negotiated if no new contract is put in place.

“We understand Raum has previously spoken with United. Crucially, we can confirm he would be happy with the prospect of moving to Old Trafford and competing with Luke Shaw for a place in the squad.”

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBtr2nkhtC" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2572px; aspect-ratio: 2572/1757;" ></smartframe-embed>

David Raum has a great understanding with Sesko

INEOS prefer to sign Premier League-proven talents and usually prefer signing players below the age of 26. Youri Tielemans is an exception, but his exploits in England made it a no-brainer.

Whether United will proceed with David Raum depends on their pursuit of Hall. Should Newcastle’s adamant stance not change, the German defender might end up becoming the go-to option owing to his attractive price.

Incidentally, Christopher Vivell knows him well, while Benjamin Sesko had built up a solid partnership with the left-back during his time in the Bundesliga. These could be attractive points to consider.

Manchester United have consistently turned away from their preferred targets whenever they have been met with exorbitant price tags this summer.

However, with less than two weeks remaining before the Premier League season kicks off, INEOS find themselves in a tricky situation, having made only two major signings.

They face a similar obstacle in their pursuit of a left-back.

Manchester United willing to move for Myles Lewis-Skelly

It has been widely reported that Arsenal left-back Myles Lewis-Skelly has been offered to Manchester United, with Arsenal thought to be open to parting ways with their academy product after signing Bruno Guimarães.

According to The Sun, United are “plotting a shock bid” for Lewis-Skelly but consider his valuation to be too high.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="04742eb90cefa12a5e3ab9bae92c2b93" image-id="neim7vw7MfeL" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3500px; aspect-ratio: 3500/2333;" ></smartframe-embed>

Arsenal are understood to be open to offers of around £60 million for their technically gifted talent.

United’s priority target for the left-back role remains Lewis Hall, but they would “settle” for Lewis-Skelly amid difficulties prising the Newcastle United star away.

The Red Devils are also in the market for a third midfielder and Lewis-Skelly is capable of playing as a defensive midfielder.

More complications than just money

Lewis-Skelly is available for transfer, but any move for the 19-year-old could allegedly be complicated as “a number of agents are attempting to help facilitate a deal.”

The Arsenal defender is represented by his mother, Marcia.

United have reportedly tracked Lewis-Skelly for several months but have considered Hall to be the more attractive option.

Given Arsenal’s asking price and agent-related concerns, United may continue to chase their number one target, Hall, who is thought to be keen on moving to Old Trafford.

A worrying Mason Mount fitness update has surfaced as Manchester United prepare to face Leeds United at Croke Park on Wednesday.

Injured

Mount has enjoyed a positive pre-season with a string of fine performances in midfield, hence why he sparked fears when he pulled up with an issue that forced him to come off after just 19 minutes during Saturday’s meeting with Paris Saint-Germain.

The England international was replaced by Tyler Fletcher. Mount was seen in conversation with members of United’s medical staff before he made his way down the tunnel, in a sight that has become all too familiar for supporters.

Following the final whistle, footage of the player boarding the team coach while walking comfortably provided a source of genuine optimism regarding his condition.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="04742eb90cefa12a5e3ab9bae92c2b93" image-id="ARCH796049_00356319" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3140px; aspect-ratio: 3140/2090;" ></smartframe-embed>

Michael Carrick spoke to the media and explained that Mount had sustained a kick and his substitution was simply precautionary.

Carrick added, “We want to keep the group strong and we’ve been fortunate to get everyone to this stage fit and well, so we wanted to be careful with that.”

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="1ffbae35d432d0d71911ca2a0b209fbb" image-id="prsidaiR2GCc" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3000px; aspect-ratio: 3000/2000;" ></smartframe-embed>

Now, ESPN have provided a concerning update that will alarm supporters all over again with just over a week until the start of the Premier League season.

Mount update

Rob Dawson writes, “Mason Mount is a doubt for Manchester United’s preseason friendly against Leeds United in Dublin on Wednesday as he continues his recovery from a foot injury, sources have told ESPN.”

“He was replaced as a precaution and was seen leaving the stadium unaided. However, the 27-year-old was unable to take part in sessions on Monday or Tuesday and is unlikely to play any part in United’s friendly against Premier League rivals Leeds at Croke Park on Wednesday.”

Mount’s absence from training will understandably raise alarm bells. The focus now shifts to Carrick and what he reveals in the build-up to or aftermath of the Leeds clash.

Regardless, it’s clear that United can’t rely on Mount to keep fit and must intensify efforts to secure at least one more midfield signing.

Already, the Red Devils have secured the services of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans from Chelsea and Aston Villa respectively.

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has sunk to a new low after a major setback in his AS Monaco stint.

Fall from grace

Pogba has endured an extremely difficult time since departing United as a free agent in the summer of 2022.

He returned to Juventus but things did not go according to plan, firstly due to injuries, which limited him to just a handful of appearances.

The World Cup winner was handed a lengthy ban for failing a doping test. He tested positive for DHEA, a banned substance that raises levels of testosterone. He was provisionally suspended by Italy’s national anti-doping (NADO Italia) tribunal before being banned for four years in February 2024.

Pogba consistently denied any wrongdoing and his appeal bore fruit in October when the Court of Arbitration for Sport reduced his suspension to 18 months.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOB4j1Cwlg1" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5568px; aspect-ratio: 5568/3712;" ></smartframe-embed>

The Carrington academy graduate sealed a sensational return to football last summer when he signed for Monaco. But he only made six competitive appearances for the side during the 2025/26 campaign, totalling 115 minutes of football.

The player sustained another pre-season injury and several French media outlets are reporting that Monaco have now decided to release him as a result.

Huge blow

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed as much, writing on X, “BREAKING: AS Monaco offer contract termination to Paul Pogba.”

“Club want to mutually terminate his deal by September 1st to let Paul find new club this year.”

“Decision up to Pogba (now injured) but AS Monaco informed his camp, as per Nice Matin and Le Parisien.”

Out of the blue, news broke that Manchester United were one of the clubs offered a chance to sign Myles Lewis-Skelly.

While the Arsenal gem has, since his breakthrough, proved he has the quality to thrive against the Premier League’s best, Arsenal’s decision-makers have since made some interesting decisions that directly impact him.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="84d65181a95c24c4fea73e44b4e27a17" image-id="ltKDfaKMIZ8T" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3953px; aspect-ratio: 3953/3010;" ></smartframe-embed>

Lewis-Skelly cannot seem to convince Arteta to trust him for a key role

Despite making the left-back spot his own in the 2024-25 season, that did not stop Mikel Arteta from pursuing Bayer Leverkusen left-back Piero Hincapie.

Alongside signing Hincapie, the Spaniard also overlooked Lewis-Skelly at left-back, preferring Riccardo Calafiori instead.

As a result, the young Gunner spent most of last season on the bench behind the two in the pecking order.

It was only once pressure mounted to drop Martin Zubimendi, who was experiencing a dip in form, from the starting line-up towards the end of the season that Lewis-Skelly finally got his opportunities, filling in at midfield, his original position.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="04742eb90cefa12a5e3ab9bae92c2b93" image-id="ARCH821291_00364675" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3500px; aspect-ratio: 3500/2333;" ></smartframe-embed>

Yet despite proving he was ready for a key role at the centre of the park, Arsenal have since gone ahead and signed Bruno Guimarães.

For many, the biggest casualty of that transfer is Lewis-Skelly.

Decides on Emirates exit

So when reports suggested he had been offered to United and other top clubs like Chelsea, it made sense.

However, what will leave many surprised, given the situation the 19-year-old finds himself in, is what The Athletic is now reporting:

“Myles Lewis-Skelly wants to stay at Arsenal and is fully focused on establishing himself in Mikel Arteta’s first-team plans for the upcoming season.

“The 19-year-old’s performances have attracted interest from elsewhere, but Lewis-Skelly is happy at Arsenal and is not exploring a move away.”

Old Trafford could have been the perfect fresh start

Despite his game time now looking massively threatened, it is interesting that Lewis-Skelly wants to stay at the Emirates.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="04742eb90cefa12a5e3ab9bae92c2b93" image-id="ARCH6850248_00411885" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5246px; aspect-ratio: 5246/3497;" ></smartframe-embed>

This is especially interesting given how Ayden Heaven has proven that a fresh start elsewhere can redefine a career.

Had he been pushing for a move to Old Trafford, INEOS would surely have been motivated to pursue a deal.

He could have come in as a real asset for Michael Carrick, who could have used him at either left-back or midfield, with ample game time guaranteed.

The Peoples Person Reliability Assessment

Former Manchester United star Ashley Young has made a frank personal admission following his decision to retire from professional football.

United spell

Young spent more than eight years at United, making 261 appearances. He joined United in the summer of 2011 from Aston Villa in a deal worth around £17m.

He arrived as a dynamic and goal-scoring winger but over the years, developed into a flying full-back.

Young made his competitive debut in the 2011 Community Shield, helping the Red Devils beat Manchester City 3-2. He registered an assist.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOB8jG9pE8O" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4729px; aspect-ratio: 4729/3153;" ></smartframe-embed>

His Premier League debut came against West Bromwich Albion, a 2-1 victory. Young contributed to both goals. He assisted Wayne Rooney and forced an own goal. His first goals for United came during the famous 8-2 thrashing of Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal at Old Trafford in August 2011.

At United, Young won the Premier League, FA Cup, EFL Cup and the Europa League.

He proved a valuable asset for each of the managers who followed Sir Alex Ferguson and was entrusted with the captaincy under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Young left United in January 2020 for Inter Milan.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOB0Yiq2GM3" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3000px; aspect-ratio: 3000/2000;" ></smartframe-embed>

After leaving Inter, Young had two more spells in the Premier League with Aston Villa and Everton. He then signed for Ipswich Town on a free transfer in the summer of 2025. He made a handful of appearances for the Tractor Boys, helping them secure Premier League promotion.

Young announced his retirement a few weeks ago.

Admission

Speaking on the High Performance Podcast, Young explained that his body is breaking down.

He detailed the extent of his physical troubles, revealing that he requires hip replacement surgery.

The former United skipper said, “I went down on my hip in November and had an injection. I have always said to myself: ‘If my body is saying you need injections, there is a problem, you need to think about retiring.’ Basically I need a hip replacement, in November I was told I would need it in about 10 years time.”

“I got to January and was due to have another injection which would have got me through to the end of the season, as I was saying to the specialist ‘I know it is painful, but I want to make sure I do everything I can possibly do to help the team.’ About a week before I am about to have the injection, I go down on it in training and I am like ‘this is worse, I know it is a lot worse.’”

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" image-id="esmeNa32Bao6" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3257px; aspect-ratio: 3257/2172;" ></smartframe-embed>

The 41-year-old revealed that after this episode, the specialist informed him that the issue had worsened and he had two years left to replace his knee.

“From January to the end of the season, I literally had two or three months where I couldn’t train it was that painful. I saw the specialist again and said ‘I’m not going out like this’. He said he didn’t want to give me another injection as it would weaken the area.”

“I asked him ‘are you telling me I can’t play football again, you can say it if you want, trust me if I get an opportunity to be back on the pitch, I’ll be back on the pitch.’ The last two months of the season I was training every day and he was like ‘it is not possible, you shouldn’t be training.’”

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" image-id="esmeNa32Bao6" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3257px; aspect-ratio: 3257/2172;" ></smartframe-embed>

Young continued, “It would have been incredible to come onto the pitch for the last game of the season but for me to train like I did that week and for us to be promoted on the last day of the season, it was fitting.”

Young also added a Serie A winners’ medal to his collection during his spell at Milan.

Manchester United defender Noussair Mazraoui has identified four youngsters who have blown him away in pre-season.

Back in the mix

Mazraoui was part of a group of United players who returned to training last week following the conclusion of his post-World Cup break.

He helped Morocco reach the quarter-finals of the tournament in North America, where they were eliminated by Kylian Mbappe’s France.

Mazraoui got his first taste of pre-season action last weekend as United played out a 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain. He played the entire opening 45 minutes. He played a key role under Michael Carrick last season as United embarked on a superb run to secure Champions League football.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOB0GSgNUoI" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2979px; aspect-ratio: 2979/2032;" ></smartframe-embed>

The 28-year-old is now looking to kick on and make his mark. He spoke to club media and revealed that he has been impressed with the attitude and work ethic in pre-season.

Mazraoui also hailed the youngsters who have stood out in pre-season, particularly Shea Lacey, the Fletcher twins and JJ Gabriel.

Mazraoui’s remarks

He said, “I think you see that Michael Carrick and the staff have clear ideas, not just this season, last season as well. I think they’re building it further. Of course, I’m just one week here but what I’ve seen in just one week is building on what we did last season and even getting better on that, in the intensity, in the ball possession, in being brave.”

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="04742eb90cefa12a5e3ab9bae92c2b93" image-id="neimyxqXUrez" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3691px; aspect-ratio: 3691/2459;" ></smartframe-embed>

“All those things we showed, the positive things. [And we’re] working on those moments, those things which we were not doing great last season, trying to do them better this season.”

He remarked about the youngsters, “I’m impressed by Shea Lacey, he’s doing a good job. Both Fletchers as well (Jack and Tyler), really impressed by them.”

“Of course, at 15 years if you make your debut – not officially yet – but JJ Gabriel, that’s also something not usual. It’s good that a club like this, a big club, has Academy players coming up.”

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="84d65181a95c24c4fea73e44b4e27a17" image-id="ltKDu2PQwyr3" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4350px; aspect-ratio: 4350/3107;" ></smartframe-embed>

Mazraoui added, “I remember from my time when I was young and experiencing those moments [of coming away on pre-season trips], you see what the future can give you if you really get your chance and go for your chance, so I think that’s also a big motivation.”

The United man revealed that he is looking forward to Wednesday’s test against Leeds United at Croke Park.

Today, news broke that Arsenal prodigy Myles Lewis-Skelly has been offered to several clubs, with Manchester United among those given the chance to sign the young Gunner.

Most United fans who have had the chance to watch Lewis-Skelly would feel that this represents an opportunity too good to pass up.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" image-id="esmeIOcBgnJF" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 1821px; aspect-ratio: 1821/2731;" ></smartframe-embed>

In fact, some would suggest INEOS should stop deliberating and sanction the transfer.

Man United on the hunt for a midfielder and left-back

Ahead of transfer deadline day, the Red Devils hope to strike two deals.

They hope to sign a midfielder and a left-back in a double swoop that would give Michael Carrick the squad depth he needs to compete on multiple fronts.

So far, United have not had much luck securing these deals, but they can now turn to Lewis-Skelly, a quality player who can cover both positions to great effect.

Why United are hesitant over a move for Lewis-Skelly

A move for the young Gunner therefore looks like a no-brainer, yet The Sun now reports that INEOS are not so keen to pounce on the Lewis-Skelly opportunity.

They explain, “United monitored Lewis-Skelly earlier in the year and are among the clubs to have been offered the Arsenal star.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="04742eb90cefa12a5e3ab9bae92c2b93" image-id="ARCH612724_00295317" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4305px; aspect-ratio: 4305/2872;" ></smartframe-embed>

“But they have identified Hall, 21, as the ideal long-term replacement for Luke Shaw.”

Waiting on Lewis Hall surely shows how optimistic United remain about signing him.

However, a move for Lewis-Skelly should not necessarily hinder a move for Lewis Hall.

Lewis-Skelly and Hall can still both be signed for different roles

Towards the end of last season, Lewis-Skelly transitioned into a midfield role, proving effective there and even featuring in a Champions League final.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="1ffbae35d432d0d71911ca2a0b209fbb" image-id="prsi8OUKF4JQ" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2700px; aspect-ratio: 2700/1800;" ></smartframe-embed>

Signing him for midfield therefore makes perfect sense while United still pursue Hall for left-back.

Ultimately, given that the Arsenal man can play two positions at just 19 years old, signing him would make him an asset Carrick could rely on heavily.

The Peoples Person Reliability Assessment

Overall credibility: 6/10
Why?

Credible sources report that Myles Lewis-Skelly has been offered to United

TPP View

It is too early to say whether United have passed on Myles Lewis-Skelly, particularly with alternatives to Lewis Hall still being actively considered.

Manchester United assistant manager Steve Holland has endorsed a novel approach implemented during pre-season that he feels could enhance the team’s prospects ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Unusual practice

United are enjoying a positive pre-season as the start of the new 2026/27 Premier League term nears.

So far, Michael Carrick’s men have faced Wrexham, Rosenborg, Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. They face Leeds United and AC Milan before opening the season with a clash against newly promoted Hull City.

In addition to electing to remain in Europe for their pre-season preparations rather than undertaking an overseas tour, United have also diverged from convention by utilising Carrington as their primary base between matches.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="1ffbae35d432d0d71911ca2a0b209fbb" image-id="prsiANblUby2" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 1999px; aspect-ratio: 1999/1333;" ></smartframe-embed>

Players have returned on a staggered basis, contingent upon their participation in the World Cup and the point at which their nations were eliminated.

Speaking to club media, Holland emphasised the benefits of United basing themselves at Carrington, explaining that it has given the coaching team greater control over conditioning and workload management, an approach that could prove beneficial when the competitive campaign begins.

Holland’s remarks

The 56-year-old said from United’s training camp in Ireland, “The difference between pre-season and the season is that, in the season, every decision you make as a coach is about what helps you to win the game.”

“Now [in pre-season] we’re in a period where we’re trying… every decision we make before, during, [or at] half-time in games, is about trying to give players the right minutes, trying to protect them at the right times, trying to push them at the right times, to get them to the perfect level for the start.”

He continued, “So it’s a different process, and it is complicated because, I mean, we had five or six training today [Monday] for the first time in a little while. There’s still another one to come back tomorrow.”

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="1ffbae35d432d0d71911ca2a0b209fbb" image-id="prsiK1dSqjX1" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3670px; aspect-ratio: 3670/2447;" ></smartframe-embed>

“So they are all at different levels and that requires a lot of attention, but we have an excellent staff that are across that. So it is what it is. It’s a challenge but we’ve had a good plan and, you know, that’s gone to plan at this stage.”

In terms of United making greater use of Carrington, Holland said, “We’ve been in control of the facilities, the pitch, the recovery.”

“Then being able to just travel in and out to play high-level games, returning to Carrington again for the following week, has given us the best possible chance, I would say, of being ready for the start, given that it’s a tournament year. I’m really happy with the programme that we’ve had, and how it’s gone to this point.”

Holland is excited about the new season and agrees that there is genuine cause for optimism, especially with Champions League football back at Old Trafford.

“I think generally speaking, everyone’s always optimistic at the start, but I think there is genuine optimism this year with how the team was last year, with some of the additions we’ve made. We want to be competitive in every tournament that we’re in, so yeah, it’s an exciting season for everyone.”

“Champions League football as well, which is where Manchester United, where we should be, but of course it’s not quite as easy as that. It’s a very competitive league. But it’s exciting to have it and we’re really looking forward to getting up and running now.”

United’s meeting with Leeds at Croke Park kicks off on Wednesday at 7.30 pm.
